WestFest All Over Westbeth: A Series of Site Specific Dances

WestFest Productions will present its second annual site-specific dance festival WestFest All Over Westbeth: A Series of Site-Specific Dances.

The festival will be set throughout the intricate architecture of the famous Westbeth Artists’ Housing Complex in the West Village. Dance will decorate the hallways, stairwells, basement crevices, the laundry room, the courtyards, the engine room and the roof; bringing life to a building dedicated to the arts.

WestFest All Over Westbeth: A Series of Site-Specific Dances is a FREE event open to the public.

Tours will begin at 2 pm on Sunday May 6th and continue until 4 pm, running every 15 minutes. To join a guided tour, audience should gather in the Westbeth Courtyard, entrance at 55 Bethune St., Manhattan, NY. This year’s site-specific festival will include the work of 14 choreographers.

CHOREOGRAPHERS AND DANCERS BIOS

Westbeth resident artists include:

Carol Nolte, collaborating with Westbeth puppeteer Ralph Lee. Carol is a long term resident of Westbeth, choreographer, and founder of WestFest dance festival series.

Ralph Lee is a lifetime resident of Westbeth, the Artistic Director of Mettawee Theatre, and founder and director of the Village Halloween Parade (1974-85). Festival contributor,

Sally Gross, is a lifetime Westbeth resident, choreographer, creator, teacher, and seminal figure in the downtown New York City dance scene.

WestFest is produced by Carol Nolte and Kirstin Kapustik with support from the Westbeth Artisits’ Residence Council. Past WestFest events at Westbeth have included the 2011 free site specific performance, a free day-long Dance for Film Festival, and, of course, the WestFest Dance Festival at the Cunningham Studio Theater, 2009-2011.

Kirstin Kapustik joins Carol Nolte this year as co-producer of WestFest. Their rare partnership spans generations, bringing fresh concepts to dance history and the future of WestFest as a presenting organization. Carol Nolte, a choreographer and dance producer for nearly 40 years, is a member of the Westbeth Artists’ Residence Council. Kirstin Kapustik is a choreographer, curator, teacher, producer, and arts administrator. WestFest is a celebration of the historic artistic nature of not only Westbeth Artist Housing, but the entirety of Manhattan’s West Village, which has been home to many famous early modern dance choreographers and dancers, and continues to attract the brightest lights of contemporary dance, music, art, theater and literature.
