Westbeth Artists Residents Council WARC

Elected annually by the resident artists of Westbeth Artists Housing, the Westbeth Artists Residents Council’s mission is to provide the collective voice of our residential community via tenant advocacy to safeguard affordable artist housing, and to support at Westbeth the production and presentation of art and to sponsor programming with resident and guest artists and in partnership with other cultural organizations.

Activities

WARC sponsors free poetry and literary readings, theatrical performances, dance concerts, music festivals, film screenings, artist’s talks, in the Westbeth Community Room and exhibits the work of resident and guest artists in the Westbeth Gallery.

WARC collaborates with Whitney Museum, the PEN Literary organization, Guggenheim Museum, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, New York Foundation for the Arts, Pratt Institute, and others, as well as sponsoring the annual PEN WORLD VOICES WESTBETH EDITION and WESTFEST dance events in the Spring, and OPENHOUSE NY and OPEN STUDIOS in the Fall.

WARC works closely with the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation with regard to preserving the historic character of the West Village neighborhood, and zoning issues.

WARC functions as a tenants association and partners with the Westbeth Corp Board of Directors to address issues of concern to the residents.

WARC also sponsors free and low cost Acting Classes, Singing Classes, Feldenkrais, and Yoga classes. The Westbeth Beautification Committee, a subcommittee of WARC sponsors the legendary HEREWestbeth Flea Market.

WARC is supported by grants from the NYC Dept of Cultural Affairs, the NYC Dept of Youth Services, and community cultural grants from New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson’s office, and State Senator Thomas Duane’s office. The Council also received a Pollack Krasner grant for its efforts in promoting Westbeth artists on its own website, plus other social media. Please consider making a donation HERE
