Westbeth Gallery Annex: the 9-11 Decade – 14 Artists Reflect

15 August – 17 September 2011

Westbeth Artists’ Housing is proud to present a new show memoralizing artists’ response in the decade after 9-11. Organized by Brenda Berkman, a retired NYC firefighter, with assistance from State Senator Tom Duane, and subsequent help from Karen Santry – gallery annex coordinator, the Westbeth Artists Residents Council, and Steve Neil, Executive Director, this show is a deep and complex response to the events of that day and the days that follow.

Ruby Ornstein – new Smithsonian Folkways cd

Smithsonian Folkways has just published Ruby Ornstein’s cd, From Kuno to Kebyar: Balinese Gamelan Angklung.

The music is played on a set of bronze instruments called gamelan angklung. Ms Ornstein, an ethnomusicologist, chose the tracks from hundreds of recordings she made while doing field work in Bali in the early 1960s.

Not only is it the first CD devoted exclusively to gamelan angklung music, it is also the first in Smithsonian Folkways new “direct-to-digital” series – no cd liner notes or booklet. However a pdf version of extensive liner and track notes is available for download from the Smithsonian website whether or not you order the cd.

Joseph Chaikin installed in Theater Hall of Fame

Joseph Chaikin

Joseph Chaikin (1935-2003), was installed in the Theater Hall of Fame in 2010 as director in a ceremony at the Gershwin Theater on Jan. 25, 2011 . James Nicola of the Signature Theatre presented Joe — avant-garde actor, director and playwright, creator of the Open Theatre and best known for his collaborations with Sam Shepard, who said Mr. Chaikin “used words like a sword to pierce the heart,” and Samuel Beckett, who dedicated a poem to him. Mr. Chaikin had an uncanny effect on people, partly because of what Peter Brook called his purity and his “fiery steel-blue eyes.” Famously, he fought back after a stroke to continue to create. Jim Houghton, founder and director of the Signature Theater, received the award for Joe.
