Jennifer Gibson is certified through the reputable Integral Yoga Institute of New York City, which has served the West Village community and surrounding areas for over 50 years.

Jennifer has been a Yoga Instructor for the past 12 years, specializing in yoga for seniors since 2011.
She is thrilled to share the tools of yoga with seniors for balance and building strength. In Jennifer’s current work with seniors, what began as one class quickly grew into three different classes per week, each packed with 20-30 students. Participants range between the ages of early 60s to early 90s and have a wide variety of ability.

Jennifer is passionate about making the practice of yoga accessible to everyone. She loves how appreciative seniors are to learn yoga and how much they look forward to every class, and she is excited to bring the benefits of yoga to the Westbeth community.

PENNY JONES & CO. PUPPETS has been a mainstay of children’s theater in New York since the 1970’s. The company specializes in informal puppet shows for children aged three to eight, and puppet ballets with live music for audiences of adults, children or both. The company performs in collaboration with chamber ensembles and orchestras. The repertory includes adaptations of classical works as well as original stories and scores. In schools, the company has performed hundreds of times, and Penny has a wide variety of programs from puppet pageants with a cast and crew of 30 to 90 school children, to workshops for small classes, and Penny’s “One on One” – interweaving puppetry, storytelling, movement and arts.

The company has appeared on television, in the Henson International Puppet Festival at the Public Theatre, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, at BAM with the Brooklyn Philharmonic, at City Center, Avery Fisher Hall, and in museums including The Museum of the City of New York, The Children’s Museum of New York, the American Museum of Natural History, at Emelin, Wave Hill, the Washington Square Music Festival, at venues from Macy’s to Barnes & Noble, and with orchestras at Bargemusic, Casa de España, Greenwich House Music School, with the New Jersey Symphony, and many, many, more…

J Taylor Basker’s solo exhibit at Bandak Gallery in Amman, Jordan entitled “Endangered: Land, People, Heritage” at Bandak Gallery Sept. 21-25. Show has been extended to October 12 due to favorable reviews.

This exhibit deals with the current crisis facing Jordan and the region. Dr. Jacqueline Taylor Basker has been living and working in Jordan for ten years, travelling back and forth from Westbeth to Jordan. Initially a professor at NYIT and chair of the Dept. of Fine Arts and Computer Graphics, she began teaching at German-Jordan University in their School of Built Environment and Architecture after NYIT left Jordan in 2013.

Her paintings address what she learned and experienced in Jordan. Dr. Jacqui, as she called by her students, was dedicated to documenting the struggle of the Palestinians, the horrors of the Gaza wars, and the tragedy of the Mavi Marmara Flotilla. The Ambassador of Turkey expressed the gratitude of the Turkish people for her artwork documenting the ten victims who died on the Mavi Marmara when he visited the exhibit. She rode a peace bus to Gaza during the 2014 war organized by “Breaking the Silence” – former IDF soldiers opposed to the Gaza wars, travelling with the noted Sheik of Peace, Ibraham al Halwa. She has painted many artworks about Gaza.

She spent much time exploring Jordan, climbing through ruins and monuments and observed the potential loss of heritage due to neglect, vandalism, or lack of funds to preserve sites. She has painted ruins from desert castles to dolmens. One painting was exhibited at the World Archaeological Congress at the Dead Sea that illustrated the top ten endangered archaeological sites in Jordan; this painting was purchased by the office of the Mayor of Amman.

Ecological dangers also threaten Jordan, especially with the refugee crisis, that strain vital resources as water, as more and more people “walk through Jordan,” another theme of a large painting in the exhibit.

Dr. Jacqui has professional knowledge (having taught Heritage and Conservation at GJU), passion for preservation and love for Jordan that motivates both her research and artwork.

The exhibit at Bandak Gallery, opened 7 PM, runs 21 September through 25 September.

The content of the publicity for the exhibit was banned by the US media company, MailChimp that is designed to help send mass emails for publicity, due to “its objectionable content” and “Acceptable Use Violation.” My account was disabled! After complaints from me and from several members of the royal family, it has now been restored!

Coffeehouse Chronicles is a free educational performance series exploring the history and development of Off-Off Broadway from its inception within the Village “Coffeehouse Theatres” of the 1960s through today. Part artist portrait, part creative event, part history lesson, part community forum, it is our mission to provide a home, as did our founder Ellen Stewart, for personal and intimate engagement with art. Since 2005 La MaMa has presented more than 123 Coffeehouse Chronicles featuring personal oral accounts from artists of the day as well as conversations with present day artists who continue to work in the same bold, daring manner. Coffeehouse Chronicles are held on one Saturday each month (September through June).

Exhibition Statement

In the art and fashion worlds this season, flowers bloom in gallery and museum exhibitions and flourish in upscale window displays, pop-up shop exteriors and a myriad of high-end products from handbags to vases.

Yet beneath their decorative veneer flowers possess a strange morbidity. The desire to encapsulate their beautiful forms is to contain that which cannot be controlled. Michel Houellebecq jokes in The Map and The Territory ( 2010. p17-18) that “the flower’s will to live manifests itself in the dazzling spots of color which break the greenish banalty of the urban landscap, as well as the generally transparent banality of the urban landscape–or at least in municipalities in bloom.” A long-standing custom of sending flowers in the event of illness and death persists. Sadie Stein observes of Childe Hassam’s painting “The Room of Flowers,” 1894, that documents poet Celia Thaxter’s room the year of her demise, that the flowers depicted symbolically replace Thaxter’s body after her death.[1]

Strange Flowers considers what flowers symbolize to artists working with flowers today and who have worked with them a while. What compels artists to utilize flowers? How do flowers function as image, form or structure for each artist, and in a larger context help navigate life? How can frail flowers combat global instability, terror, falsity? Do flowers’ reminder of life’s fleeting beauty inspire artists, or in fact do they perceive flowers as beautiful at all?
