WestZine

The idea for WestZine emerged during conversations with fellow artists about how to expand the reach of Westbeth’s gallery programming and create new ways to spotlight artists from the community alongside a broader field of contemporary voices.

Editorial Team

Carol Cooper, PHD

After graduating with a Bachelor and a MALS degree from Wesleyan University, Ms. Cooper returned to her native New York in 1978 to freelance as a music and arts critic for many publications, including the Village Voice, The Face (UK), and The New York Times. From 1985 to 1991 she launched music careers as a talent scout for both Columbia and A&M Records, then earned her doctorate in Jungian Psychology in 2020 while establishing a high school journalism program at an East Harlem magnet school. Today, in addition to working with WestZine, she also teaches as adjunct faculty for the Clive Davis Institute at NYU.

Aaron Jackson

Aaron Jackson is an artist and designer living in Harlem, New York City. He provides art direction, layout design, writing, and photography for WestZine. As a digital artist and printmaker themself, Aaron values speaking with and learning from the diverse range of artists who display at the Gallery and live at Westbeth. He hopes to continue developing WestZine as a purposeful means of promoting Westbeth’s current events as well as its rich history.

Valérie Hallier

A French native, Valérie Hallier came to NYC with a Fulbright Scholarship and graduated from SVA’s Computer Arts program. Early multimedia artwork received prizes at ACM Siggraph, SCAN Arts Symposium (PA), Ars Electronica in the US and Anima Mundi in Brazil. Hallier’s artwork is being shown internationally. She has attended many artists residencies including LMCC Swing Space, Pioneer Works, NARS Foundation and Harvestworks. The artist is a recipient of a Contemporary Art Foundation grant, a MAAF (NYSCA & WaveFarm) grant and most recently, in 2025, the Abbey Mural Prize (National Academy of Design). In 2023, Valérie became the Visual Arts Chair and Gallery director at Westbeth in NYC. She is also a teaching artist specialized in murals.
