Summer Soundwaves presents John Eckert and The NY Jazz 9 is a troupe of nine veteran jazz masters whose cohesion and virtuosity support an eclectic repertoire in a free outdoor concert at Westbeth.

John Eckert (Trumpet): Has played with the greats Stan Kenton, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Benny Goodman, Buck Clayton, Grover Mitchell, Lee Konitz, and Bobby Short. Beyond his versatility within the Jazz medium, he has also played in the orchestra pit of several Broadway musicals, as well as with the Simon & Garfunkel reunion band.

Tim Harrison (Piano, Composer): A UK native, Tim Harrison’s highly-praised debut album, Ar∙ia, features his original compositions based on the poetry of Emily Dickinson.

Jeff Brillinger (Drums): Has toured and recorded with the Woody Herman Orchestra, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Mel Torme, Zoot Simms among others and has appeared at major clubs and festivals in the U.S., Europe and Japan.

Gene Perla (Bass): Has played with Carlos “Patato” Valdes, the famed Cuban conguero, Nina Simone, Woody Herman, Sarah Vaughan, Elvin Jones, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Sonny Rollins, and Stone Alliance. Gene teaches at Lehigh University & The New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music.

Dave Smith (Trumpet): Has recorded alongside Harry Connick Jr., Lenny Pickett and Tom Jones among others. His latest album “Anticipation” was Downbeat Editor’s Pick: “Smith…has power and a beautiful tone on his instrument, and he’s a find composer too.” (Frank Alkyer, Downbeat).

Jason Jackson (Trombone): A regular member of the Grammy Award winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra for over 10 years and the lead trombonist with the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band for 7, he’s worked with Ray Charles, Charles Mingus Big Band, Barry Manilow, and James Brown just to name a few.

Noah Bless (Trombone): Discography includes over 50 albums for various artists such as Paquito D’Rivera, Mario Bauza, Don Braden and Celia Cruz. He’s contributed to many world-class jazz and Latin orchestras including; Marc Anthony, Spanish Harlem, Duke Ellington, Chico O’Farril and the Lincoln Center Afro-Cuban Orchestra.

Bobby Porcelli (Flute, Alto Saxophone): One of Latin and Afro-Cuban jazz ́s most accomplished flautists and alto saxophonists. He played with Tito Puente for over thirty years, in addition to the Tito Rodriguez Orchestra and the Machito Orchestra, and is featured in the Mambo Kings movie soundtrack.

Terry Goss (Baritone Saxophone): Has been heard with the likes of Ray Charles, Wayne Newton, Dionne Warwick, Carol Channing, Rich Little, Mel Torme, The Drifters, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, and many more. Saxophone instructor and an ensemble director at NYU for 10 years, he’s appeared in every major jazz venue in New York City and a number of others around the world.
