Gallery Shows to See in January

“In 1972, 13 female artists in New York put on an exhibition of their work. At the time, galleries and museums showed mostly men, but feminism was burgeoning. Two watershed shows — “Twenty Six Contemporary Women Artists” at the Aldrich Museum in Connecticut and “Womanhouse” in Los Angeles — had recently taken place.

The New York exhibition, titled “13 Women Artists,” was a D.I.Y. one. It started with Ann Marshall and Joyce Robins, who invited others they knew and admired, including Louise Bourgeois, the oldest of the group. They rented a space in SoHo for a month for $650 and installed their own work.

Zürcher Gallery has now recreated a form of that exhibition, to striking effect. There are two works from the original show, but it features mostly different pieces by the same artists, mostly dated to the same period. There are terrific works by the better-known contributors, including Mary Miss, Alice Adams and Pat Lasch, who are among the seven artists of the group who are still alive. There’s also a now-classic work by Bourgeois, the most famous name in the show, who died in 2010.”
