The Westbeth Icon evening celebrates senior artists who continue to work in their field.

The newest Westbeth icon is Jack Davidson, New York actor. The evening, posted here, feature features an interview with Jack about his life and work, tributes by colleagues and family, and remarks by Jack himself.

STILL MOMENTS is a series of photos shot on my travels here and abroad, including captures from Sydney, Australia, Uruguay, South America, Tuscany, Italy, Vietnam, Lancaster, PA and New York City.

I am an observer of life and teller of stories. My eyes wander, seeing all around me as my ears listen to the sounds and the voices. Born with an insatiable curiosity to learn and specifically to learn about others, I am drawn to traveling near and far. I see and capture moments in time – colors, shapes, feelings, moods, expressions, and relationships. My life is a journey and I share it through my art whether it is photography, film, art, poetry, prose or storytelling. I invite my audience, reader, viewer into my world to see what I see, to feel what I feel, and often finding their own personal connection and experience.

Gayle Kirschenbaum is a creator who expresses herself in many forms. She began life as a visual artist and started taking photos where she loved spending hours in her darkroom. She found herself shooting stories with her photographs and painting them in an impressionist way. Her desire to use words and sound led her to moving images. She became an Emmy award-winning filmmaker whose films and programs have premiered on Netflix, HBO, and Discovery. They include Look At Us Now, Mother!, A Dog’s Life: A Dogamentary, My Nose and Little Parents. Her last film led to an invitation to give a TEDx talk called No More Drama With Mama about forgiveness. She speaks and teaches on this topic. Gayle has found herself returning to her first love, photography. Her photographs were exhibited in Spain at the Barcelona Foto Biennale in October 2018, received an honorable mention under landscape for the Pollux Awards 2019, and have been in Westbeth group shows.

She has been featured widely in the media including New York Times, NBC Today Show, Jerusalem Post and Psychology Today. She is a member of Producers Guild of America (PGA) and a judge for the Emmys and PGA.

Jennifer Gibson is certified through the reputable Integral Yoga Institute of New York City, which has served the West Village community and surrounding areas for over 50 years.

Jennifer has been a Yoga Instructor for the past 12 years, specializing in yoga for seniors since 2011.
She is thrilled to share the tools of yoga with seniors for balance and building strength. In Jennifer’s current work with seniors, what began as one class quickly grew into three different classes per week, each packed with 20-30 students. Participants range between the ages of early 60s to early 90s and have a wide variety of ability.

Jennifer is passionate about making the practice of yoga accessible to everyone. She loves how appreciative seniors are to learn yoga and how much they look forward to every class, and she is excited to bring the benefits of yoga to the Westbeth community.

The Feldenkrais Method consists of verbally directed movement sequences presented primarily to groups. A lesson generally lasts from thirty to sixty minutes. Each lesson is usually organized around a particular function.

Feldenkrais’Awareness Through Movement lessons, people engage in precisely structured movement explorations that involve thinking, sensing, moving, and imagining. Many are based on developmental movements and ordinary functional activities. Some are based on more abstract explorations of joint, muscle, and postural relationships. The lessons consist of comfortable, easy movements that gradually evolve into movements of greater range and complexity.

Feldenkrais’ lessons attempt to make one aware of his/her habitual neuromuscular patterns and rigidities and to expand options for new ways of moving while increasing sensitivity and improving efficiency. There are hundreds of Awareness Through Movement lessons contained in the Feldenkrais Method that vary, for all levels of movement ability, from simple in structure and physical demand, to more difficult lessons.

A major goal of the Feldenkrais Method is to learn how one’s most basic functions are organized and improve. By experiencing the details of how one performs any action, the student has the opportunity to learn and grow.

PENNY JONES & CO. PUPPETS has been a mainstay of children’s theater in New York since the 1970’s. The company specializes in informal puppet shows for children aged three to eight, and puppet ballets with live music for audiences of adults, children or both. The company performs in collaboration with chamber ensembles and orchestras. The repertory includes adaptations of classical works as well as original stories and scores. In schools, the company has performed hundreds of times, and Penny has a wide variety of programs from puppet pageants with a cast and crew of 30 to 90 school children, to workshops for small classes, and Penny’s “One on One” – interweaving puppetry, storytelling, movement and arts.

The company has appeared on television, in the Henson International Puppet Festival at the Public Theatre, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, at BAM with the Brooklyn Philharmonic, at City Center, Avery Fisher Hall, and in museums including The Museum of the City of New York, The Children’s Museum of New York, the American Museum of Natural History, at Emelin, Wave Hill, the Washington Square Music Festival, at venues from Macy’s to Barnes & Noble, and with orchestras at Bargemusic, Casa de España, Greenwich House Music School, with the New Jersey Symphony, and many, many, more…

Over 50 resident visual artists are represented in the annual Westbeth Winter Show, now in its 25th year at the Westbeth Gallery. Addressing such issues as feminism, climate reality, religious iconography, among others, the show encompasses a range of media and styles, and fills the gallery with a breath taking array of rigorous thought and aesthetics.

The Artist at Risk residency program is comprised of a coalition of organizations that work to safeguard free expression. Participating groups include: Safe Haven Incubator for Musicians NYC, the Artistic Freedom Initiative, ArtistSafety.net, Residency Unlimited, Westbeth Artists Housing, PEN America’s Artists at Risk Connection (ARC), and Fordham University.

Ze’eva Cohen in performance, as part of “From the Horse’s Mouth” celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Jerome Robbins Dance Division at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.

She will be one of 44 artists and scholars participating in this unique blend of movement and storytelling.
