ARLENE GOTTFRIED’s MOMMIE
selected by TIME Magazine as one of the best photograpy books of 2016

arlene-gottfried-mommie

MOMMIE is a remarkable photographic portrait of three generations of women in the family of photographer Arlene Gottfried and an intimate story of the inevitable passage of time and aging. Pictured within, we are introduced to Gottfried’s 100 year old immigrant grandmother, fragile mother, and reluctant sister over the breathtaking course of 35 years.

An artist turning their eye on their own immediate family is a well explored theme, but Gottfried has achieved the sublime with a multi-decade long commitment to document the intimate lives of her nearest kin. Gottfried succeeds in creating a complete twentieth century portrait of four lives inextricably interwoven through relation, sickness, need, love, and the absence of her father—who passed away while Arlene was still young.

Living as many mid-century Jewish New York families did, the Gottfrieds were not wealthy and lacked any trappings of luxury. Close examination of their world on Avenue A in Manhattan’s Lower East Side reveals a dimly lit small apartment, cartons of budget saltines and groceries, chipped paint, damaged floor tiles, guarded loose change, and well worn clothes – details natural to the lives of many families of immigrants in New York.

Mommie is testament to the passage of time, changes in the generations, losing loved ones and a familial experience at once both similar and unique to all.

“What they bring together is not only a global vision and singular skills in composition and arranging, but a highly talented group of performers.” — JAZZIZ magazine full review

“Composed lyricism and some effortlessly cool blowing by some of New York’s best jazz players.” – The Wire

“Tremendous musical chops and a terrific sense of play” – Wine X

“The Kamikaze outfit takes the high dive into a dangerously shallow tank shared by circus music and serious composition, and emerges victorious” – SF Bay Guardian

“The Kamikaze Ground Crew, with saxes and accordion, was wild but grounded, taking us further into Berlioz’s manic heart than most orchestras ever could.”

final email poster copy.pages

Ken Wade has been singing songs and telling stories for a long time.

Featured on Australian national television & WBAI radio, he has performed in Melbourne, London, L.A., and Belfast.

In New York City he’s sung and told stories at Dixon Place, NWS Festival, NYC Farmer’s Markets (& upstate), Make Music NYC, the (old) Brecht Forum, the Westbeth Music Festival, Rikers Island, and the New York Public Library.

In 2014 he performed a two act one man show at the spectacular Barn Space in N Virginia. He appears at The Moth, as well as Word and other story telling venues in New York City. 2013 – 2014, He was regularly invited performer at The Stage Left Theater, NYC.

I greatly enjoyed the range of Ken’s music. Those he wrote, those that are well-known, but so uniquely interpreted, and those he picked up in his worldwide travels which might never be heard but for rare individuals as he. His stories are full of insight, warmth and wit.

– Marsha Spyros, Adult Programming, The New York Public Library

My pleasure is not only listening to his tremendous muical skills, but also observing the hundreds of others who enjoy his playing.

– James Barry, NY Farmer Union Square Market, NYC

Ken Wade took us on a rare journey that was simply wonderful. With our toes tapping, he connected each story with a song that was nothing short of mesmerizing

– Mikki Jordan, Director, Lenox Hill House

The quality and joy he brings to his music and stories is contagious and made his performances and workshops a joy for all to share.

– Easter Ross, Program Direftor, Song and Dance Society of America and NY Pinewoods Folk Club

An absolute delight, deeply funny with an incredible spirit.

– Deb Mongolian, Playwright, Artist, Founding Member of the Split Birches Theater Co.

Kate Walter has an essay in the new anthology, How Does That Make You Feel: True Confessions from Both Sides of the Therapy Couch

kate-walker-how-does-that-make-you-feel

Readers of HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL? will never again have to wonder, “What does my therapist really think of me?”

This anthology is the first ever to feature essays about this profound connection from the perspective of both the ‘shrink’ and the ‘shrunk’. Of course your therapist has thoughts about you that on occasion practically leap off his or her tongue into your ears. But at the last minute the impulse is reigned in and the therapist mask prevails.
