Marshall Reese — Media Artist

MARSHALL REESE collaborates with NORA LIGORANO as LIGORANO REESE. They have dedicated themselves to the art of collaboration since they first met in Baltimore. Their earliest collaborations began in video art and performance. Over three decades the artists have embraced hardware and software art, limited edition multiples, videos, sculptures and installations using a range of materials, traditional and digital processes.

In the late 2000’s, they began installing temporary public monuments during the political conventions a series called melted away. These sculptures of words carved in ice are filmed photographed and streamed as they melt away and disappear. They have presented 7 sculptures in 8 different cities including the presidential political conventions in 2008, 2012, and 2016. They are planning the next one in Milwaukee, WI in 2024.

Articles about their work have been published in the New York Times, Art Forum, Art In America, the Huffington Post, and seen on television and other media. They have received awards and grants including 3 NYFA fellowships as well as a NEA fellowship, two Jerome Foundation Fellowships, a Puffin grant and a number of artists residencies. They are represented by Catharine Clark Gallery and show edition work with Jim Kempner Fine Art.

Certainty of Ambiguity (2017) hand woven, fiber optic data tapestry 14 x 14 inches. Certainty of Ambiguity is a woven digital mirror. The tapestry is programmed to make animation sequences from a person's personal identity numbers: snippets of social security numbers, birthdate and credit card and cell phone numbers,

50 Different Minds (2012) hand woven, fiber optic data tapestry 50 x 50 inches. Inspired by Josef and Anna Albers, 50 Different Minds listens to live Twitter feeds and airflight data from 9 of the busiest U.S. airports and displays the information in the woven fiber textile.

Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese at The Dawn of the Anthropocene installation during the Peoples Climate March September 21, 2014. The artists collaborated with 350.org to bring attention to the climate crisis during the U.N. conference on climate.

In 2014 during the Peoples Climate March Ligorano Reese installed a sculpture of the words The Future carved in ice at the intersection of 23 Street and Fifth Avenue in NYC. The installation lasted 16 hours and was seen by hundreds of people as it melted away.

In 2020 Ligorano Reese organized The School of Good Citizenship a citywide series of art exhibitions, film screenings and workshops in Charlotte, NC. The project culminated in I Once Was Lost But Now Am Found - 4 nights of live streamings of spoken word performances and virtual choirs.
