Claudia Vargas — Visual Arts

Vargas' current project is a series of figurative oil portraits of working class women of color. She strives to observe these women with the respect they are due from a place of shared experience and attempts to offer a window into their lives, dispositions, and trials. The portraits draw attention to subtle nuance in expression through unexpected uses of color. This project attempts to make these women visible on level ground and resist the extreme invisibility, or spectacle, to which they are often relegated.
