W. B. Yeats (1865–1939) was an Irish poet, playwright, and one of the major literary figures of the 20th century. Born in Dublin, he spent much of his childhood in County Sligo, which deeply influenced his imagination and poetry.

Yeats was a central figure in the Irish Literary Revival, helping to establish a distinctly Irish literary culture. He co-founded the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and wrote plays as well as poetry. His early work drew heavily on Irish mythology, folklore, mysticism, and romantic symbolism.

As he grew older, his poetry became more direct, political, and philosophically complex. His best-known poems include “The Lake Isle of Innisfree,” “The Second Coming,” “Sailing to Byzantium,” and “Among School Children.” He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923.
