The Jazz Passengers are an American avant-garde jazz and musical comedy group founded in New York City in 1987 by saxophonist Roy Nathanson and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes. Formed by former members of John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards and the Big Apple Circus band.Scene: Emerged as pioneers of the 1980s East Village and downtown music scene centered around The Knitting Factory.Sound: Known for blending post-bop jazz, vaudeville entertainment, theatrical humor, and eclectic modern genres. Their name is a play on Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Gained wider mainstream recognition through collaborations with pop and rock icons like Debbie Harry (Blondie) and Elvis Costello.
