John Menegon Trio: “Belongings”
John Menegon (bass & compositions) @johnmenegon
Leo Genovese (piano) @leogenovese
Harvey Sorgen (drums) @harveysorgen

It was 2012, during a celebration of the late drummer Jack DeJohnette’s 70th birthday (produced by Jazzstock), where Harvey, Leo, and John (who all had a close relationship with Jack) played for a celebration of one of the
most influential drummers of our time. It was at this event that our relationship as a Trio began and led us to this group’s exploration of sound and discovery.

“Belongings” refers to the ownership of sentimental objects. We all seek to belong, and our Musical Language is what connects us. The object that we share is our music! Our collective pairings over the years with pianist Marilyn Crispell, saxophonist Joe Lovano, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and countless others
are what bind us together as a group. New music will be recorded on April 13th and released this spring on a label TBA!

A debut performance of this music will be presented in New York City at
Westbeth Community Room (155 Bank Street) on Sunday, APRIL 12th (7
‘til 9 pm)
Sponsored by “Jazzstock Festival”

JOHN MENEGON (bass & compositions)
“New York bassist John Menegon is in the line of George Mraz and Michael Moore; a
harmonically sophisticated bassist with technical facility who swings hard when it’s
called for.” Kirk Silsbee, Downbeat!
Menegon is a Jazz Bassist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer. He began his career
as a musician in Montreal, playing in groups with the great guitarist Nelson Symonds,
pianist Vic Vogel, and guitarist Sonny Greenwich. After relocating to New York City, he
played bass for over ten years with two legendary tenor saxophonists, Dewey Redman
and Texas Tenor David “Fathead” Newman. Menegon has released six CDs as a
bandleader featuring Dewey Redman, Frank Kimbrough, Jean-Michel Pilc, Joel Frahm,
Matt Wilson, Kenny Burrell, Jack DeJohnette, Teri Roiger, John Di Martino, John
Gunther, Tineke Postma, and many others. He currently plays with jazz legend Joe
Lovano’s “Joyous Encounters” Quartet as well as numerous other stellar musicians. As
an educator, he spent over 20 years teaching in the Jazz Department at SUNY New
Paltz (NY), and also taught at Williams College, Bard, and Bennington. Menegon’s
latest recording as a leader “Sound Embrace,” released in 2024, features his original
compositions with Jean-Michel Pilc on piano, Chet Doxas on sax, and Jim Doxas on
drums. “Although Sound Embrace showcases Menegon’s exceptional writing skills, let’s
not forget the strong, lyrical, and harmonically advanced bass playing of Menegon as a
soloist intuitively interacting with the ensemble. There is something very special
about Sound Embrace.” Abe Goldstein, Papatamus Redux.

LEO GENOVESE (piano)
Leo Genovese (born 1979) is an acclaimed Argentinian jazz pianist, keyboardist, and
composer based in Brooklyn, NY. Known for his work with Esperanza Spalding, Wayne
Shorter, and Jack DeJohnette, he is a prolific artist blending jazz with free improvisation.
A Berklee College of Music graduate, he leads his own projects and is a key figure in
the NYC avant-garde scene. A reviewer for The New York Times commented on
Genovese's 2013 album, Seeds, that, "by refusing to privilege one historical style over
another, he strengthens his claim as a polyglot".  DownBeat  observed that Genovese's
compositions for the album "share an exploratory nature, whether the new terrain in
question is a marriage of electronic and acoustic sounds, an unlikely use of chromatic
scaling or the successful juxtaposition of otherwise disparate ideas."
Wayne Shorter & Leo Genovese (soloist) won a Grammy Award for Best Improvised
Jazz Solo for the Wayne Shorter composition "Endangered Species" for which Leo
accompanied him on the album Live at the Detroit Jazz Festival. Genovese won
the  DownBeat  Critics Award for Rising Star – Piano in 2023.

HARVEY SORGEN (drums)
In sound, motion, and beauty . . . so to lay the groundwork for truth. I am eternally
grateful to have created honest music with some of the greatest artists of our time. With
over 200 record credits, just a few of the artists I have had the good fortune to record
and/or perform with include: Hot Tuna, Ahmad Jamal, Paul Simon, Roswell Rudd,
Michelle Shocked, Tony Levin, Julius Hemphill, Giovanni Hildago, Zakir Hussain,
Wadada Leo Smith, Bruce Hornsby, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Dave Douglas, Duanik Lazro,
Karl Berger, Marilyn Crispell, Percy Heath, Warren Haynes, The Memphis Pilgrims,
Anthony Braxton, and Dewey Redman, among many, many others. Through touring for
over 45 years, it’s always astonishing to see the level of creativity in our music
happening around the globe. Giving workshops and master classes continues to inspire
and helps to focus on what is important on our instrument and in the music.
