SEED EXHIBIT
This is a sculpture created by my late sister, Gladys Mobijohn when
she was around 11 or 12 years old. I was a year older and had no idea
about art or that one could create something out of something else.
She used wood from a temporary banister my father had built.
Our house was filled with stories from Trinidad and Borneo – about
hidden spirits and mysterious happenings. So it seems the piece may
be referring to those stories, carved to look like a spirit. But this was
the only piece she ever made. It inspired me so much that I kept it –
carrying it with me to college, to various places where I lived, to where I
live now.
She died of an overdose in her thirties, but my kids did get to know her
kindness and humor. I don’t know why she never did anything llike this
again, but for me it was the seed which flowered in my mind and heart
and in my work.
It is about 12 inches high from an old 2×4 wood.

The piece in The Seed show, “Elegy for Gladys”, is in recognition of her artistry and to the sculptural form she created.
