Kenneth Sean Golden — Photography and Digital Media

Kenneth Sean Golden (1954-2020) was a New York City photographer and digital printmaker. He taught at New York University, The University of Pennsylvania, New York Institute of Technology, Rhode Island School of Design, The International Center of Photography, and The City College of New York.

Golden used layered and partially masked photographic images to explore masculinity and sexuality. The politics of representation were of the utmost importance to him. As a gay man, Golden engaged in creating work that addressed the sensibility of the time. Identity politics continues to define the diversity of our population. Golden found this diversity a point of celebration and one of inclusion as it adds to the articulation of who we are. He took on the challenge to explore how we can have these identities and co-exist. In his work, there is a density of elements that lends itself to a multiplicity of meanings, challenging and playing with how we see, and mixing reading with seeing.

Golden has exhibited internationally and locally for the past 40 years. Solo exhibitions include: Westbeth Gallery (New York), Vessel (New York), and Familia y Amigos (Barcelona, Spain). Group exhibitions include: Detroit Museum of New Art, Westbeth Gallery, Pulse Art, 494 Gallery, Artist Space, PS122 Gallery, Leo Castelli – Bailey House Benefit & Auction, APEX Art, and University of Illinois Gallery 400. His work is in the collection of Leslie Lohman Museum and Paris's Bibliotheque Nationale.
