Jack Dowling is currently a writer, formally painter who painted under the name John Dowling. He is a graduate of Cooper Union. After graduation in 1957, he moved to Italy where he taught art at the Positano Artists Workshop. On returning to New York, he established himself as a fine arts painter. With encouragement from Ivan Karp, then the director of the Leo Castelli Gallery, his work was exhibited in various venues including the Finch College Museum of Art, entitled “The Dominant Woman”, which featured Dowling’s painting titled “Ladies in America”. The exhibition also included works by Alex Katz and De Kooning. He previously had a solo show at the Banfer Gallery and showed his work in small galleries regionally.
