Smithsonian Folkways has just published Ruby Ornstein’s cd, From Kuno to Kebyar: Balinese Gamelan Angklung.
The music is played on a set of bronze instruments called gamelan angklung. Ms Ornstein, an ethnomusicologist, chose the tracks from hundreds of recordings she made while doing field work in Bali in the early 1960s.
Not only is it the first CD devoted exclusively to gamelan angklung music, it is also the first in Smithsonian Folkways new “direct-to-digital” series – no cd liner notes or booklet. However a pdf version of extensive liner and track notes is available for download from the Smithsonian website whether or not you order the cd.
The cd will also be available from Amazon, ITunes, and Rhapsody.
