SUMMARY:Leni Schwendinger Civic Solidarity DeathLAB - Death and the Night
DESCRIPTION:June 3\, 2025 6pm – 8pm\nWestbeth Community Room\n155 Bank St\n(enter through courtyard)\nNew York\, NY \nFREE \nTo Register for Event: Civic Solidarity \nClick to enlarge DeathLAB is pleased to announce another New York Community Trust-sponsored Civic Solidarity event\, hosted at Westbeth Artists Housing in collaboration with Urban Lighting and nighttime designer Leni Schwedinger. \nThe event will bring together two approaches to encouraging community and equity through civic design\, each running through essential aspects of life that too often remain marginalized: death and the night. \nThis Civic Solidarity event consists of a 20-minute presentation by two of DeathLAB’s research fellows\, reviewing the lab’s philosophy\, research\, and urban proposals\, including new engagement with Green-Wood Cemetery. \nLeni Schwendinger’s talk\, “Are You Afraid of the Dark\, A Light Justice Approach” will walk us through nighttime design and lighting strategies she has developed over decades of practice that include community engagement. \nShare your thoughts\, hopes\, and questions about disposition and memorialization\, both personal and societal. \nLeni Schwendinger \, Westbeth resident\, is a multi-disciplinary designer focusing on lighting and community engagement. Her projects include lighting cities\, bridges\, parks\, and waterfronts. Her work is deeply rooted in community engagement through synthesizing communal approaches to outdoor illumination\, on-site lighting workshops\, and her NightSeeing™ program\, where she leads nighttime walks through urban spaces around the world. The walks raise awareness about the fear and poetics of the darkened hours to improve the nighttime environment\, especially for women and night-shifters.

In the case of a new music presenting organization\, it requires not only diligence and cognizance of achievements of the past but also an ethic of keeping one’s ear to the ground for emerging stylistic and technological developments\, as well as talented new composers on the scene. Composers Concordance\, founded in 1984 by Joseph Pehrson and Patrick Hardish\, advised by Otto Luening\, strives to present contemporary music in innovative ways\, with an emphasis on thematic programming. Directors Gene Pritsker and Dan Cooper co-curate the programs and lead the CompCord Ensemble\, Chamber Orchestra\, String Orchestra\, and Big Band. Associate Directors are Milica Paranosic\, Peter Jarvis\, Debra Kaye\, and Seth Boustead. Composers Concordance has also created a Naxos-distributed record label: Composers Concordance Records. Composers Concordance’s overriding vision is to promote contemporary music\, composers\, and new works as a rightful and respected part of society. Good music performed and recorded well\, pushing the boundaries of sound and composition. \n“Composers Concordance..a veritable New York new music institution of concerts\, album production and multiple ensembles under a sweeping\, tenacious brand\, thriving on the emulsion of contemporary classical\, free improv\, jazz and rock\, overt humor and fearless political statements\, all very much in evidence..The ensemble..was masterful throughout.”-John Pietaro\, The New York City Jazz Record \n“An unwavering force in giving composers exposure through concert bookings and its own record label\, the intrepid new-music organization Composers Concordance” – The Brooklyn Rail \n“The Composers Concordance folks are unpredictable and at times refreshingly irreverent in a reverent sort of way….ingenious fun” – Classical-Modern Music Review \n“Enterprising new music organization” – The New York Times \nPlease follow NYC Covid-19 protocols & updates:\nhttps://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/home\nhttps://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/covid-19-main.page\nhttps://www.nycgo.com/coronavirus-information-and-resources-for-travelers \n2024-2025 SEASON SITE

SUMMARY:FIRST FRIDAY MUSIC: Noah Haidu Trio
DESCRIPTION:Click to enlarge Friday Dec 6\, 2024 at 8pm \nWestbeth Community Room\n155 Bank St\nenter through courtyard\nNew York\, NY \nFree \nModern jazz piano trio with a broad repertoire of original compositions and a few pop covers and standards. The repertoire will feature original compositions and arrangements by Noah\, Kayvon and Gervis\, alongside extended interpretations of works from the jazz lexicon. The music will blend the trio’s unique personalities\, experimentalism\, and deep understanding of the music’s history. \n Noah Haidu\nJazz pianist and composer Noah Haidu combines modernism\, soul\, and swing to create what the Wall Street Journal has described as “his own compelling brand of pianism.”\nNoah started classical piano at age 6\, spurred on initially by fear of his vindictive piano teacher. Falling in love with Jazz at age 20\, the young pianist moved to NYC\, supporting himself as a waiter until he was fired for breaking one too many dishes.\nAfter paying his dues as a freelancer for many years\, Noah has lately toured and recorded with icons such as Billy Hart\, Buster Williams\, Lenny White and Steve Wilson. His Sunnyside Records albums garnered millions of streams and reached the top 5 in the JazzWeek radio charts. @instagram \, YouTube\,https://www.noahhaidu.com\nNoah Haidu Photo:Jimmy Katz \nGervis Myles\nBorn and raised in Wisconsin\, double bassist Gervis Myles is a 2020 graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with an impressive range of musical experiences. He has been in a wide variety of musical contexts\, ranging from the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theater in midtown\, playing South African-style pop grooves with the Ndlovu Youth Choir\, all the way to cutting-edge contemporary jazz music with artists like Tivon Pennicott and Peter Evans. He cherishes every musical experience for what it is and hopes to continue to grow and learn in New York. \nKayvan Gordon\nKayvon Gordon was born and raised in Detroit. At a young age\, he was taken under the mentorship of legendary trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. Later\, he went on to study at the University of Michigan. He has also had the honor of sharing the stage with Sullivan Fortner\, Robert Hurst\, Rodney Whitaker\, Johnny O’Neal\, Ravi Coltrane\, and JD Allen\, to name a few. Currently based in New York\, Kayvon Gordon seeks to contribute to the forward thinking aesthetic of his contemporaries while honoring the rich musical legacy of Detroit.

SUMMARY:First Friday Music: Alexis Cole presents the Music of Gigi Gryce
DESCRIPTION:Click to enlarge \nFriday Aug 2\, 2024 at 7:00 pm \nWith Haneef Nelson – trumpet\nJohn DiMartino- piano \nFeaturing Jazz Historian and Gigi Gryce biographer Noal Cohen to discuss Gigi’s life and career. \nWestbeth Community Rm\n155 Bank St (enter through courtyard)\nNew York\, NY \nHear Gigi Gryce’s popular songs like Social Call and Music in the Air alongside many never before heard lyrics to his many lesser known gems! \nGigi Gryce was a saxophonist and composer who worked with some of the best-known names in jazz during the 1950s\, including Dizzy Gillespie\, Thelonious Monk\, and Max Roach. His many compositions remain a part of the jazz repertoire today. \nHis remarkable rise from poverty led to conservatory studies and tours of Europe and Africa before he established himself as a fixture on the New York scene. His efforts as a music publisher were bold and groundbreaking\, and his quiet\, unassuming personality set him apart from most of his peers. In only a decade as a professional musician\, he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and served as a mentor to numerous aspiring young players. Gryce’s sudden disappearance at the start of the 1960s left the jazz world wondering as to his fate. Few were aware of his change of identity and professional rebirth. \nJazz Historian Noal Cohen co-authored the only known biography of Gigi Gryce. Misinformation about Gryce abounds\, and rumors have circulated for decades. Years of research and dozens of interviews were conducted for this book\, resulting in a biography that finally tells the true story of this often overlooked figure and illuminates his contributions to one of the richest periods in jazz history. \nAlexis Cole has been compared to classic jazz singers such as Sarah Vaughan and Anita O’Day. A Top Winner of the Jazzmobile Vocal Competition judged by jazz icons TS Monk\, Catherine Russell\, Grady Tate and Dr. Billy Taylor\, 3rd prize winner in the Montreux Jazz Vocal Competition\, and a finalist in the Sarah Vaughan Competition\, Alexis has a dozen albums to her credit on Motéma\, Chesky\, Venus Records and Zoho. She has recorded with such artists as Fred Hersch\, Bucky Pizzarelli\, and Don Braden. She’s been a soloist with the Boston Pops\, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and has headlined at clubs around the US and Asia. \nAs an educator\, Alexis was the head of vocal jazz at the conservatory at SUNY Purchase and counts Grammy Winning Samara Joy and rising star Anaïs Reno as her students. She is the founder and director of JazzVoice.com an online educational community featuring singing classes\, professional development sessions and private lessons from a roster of renowned jazz vocalists and educators. And she is co-founder of the Virginia Beach Vocal Jazz Summit. Her most recent release “Jazz Republic: Taiwan\, The United States and the Freedom of Swing” features original arrangements for big band and orchestra\, performed by Alexis with the Taipei Jazz Orchestra. Alexis’ latest endeavor is MusicAuditions.com\, a website to connect musicians to employers. Facebook.com/alexiscolefanpage\nInstagram.com/alexiscole \nHaneef N. Nelson works as a Composer/Arranger\, Bandleader\, Sideman\, Musical Curator\, and Educator based out of Hartford\, CT. He was introduced to the trumpet at age 12 and has stuck with it ever since. He also studied with Dave Burns at the Long Island High School of the Arts and then attended The Hartt School to study with Jackie McLean\, Raymond Williams\, Steve Davis and Nat Reeves as well as other faculty. \nHis passion for the music also brought him to the classroom to teach the cultural significance of the music known as Jazz. He has taught at The Hartt School\, UMASS Amherst\, Amherst College\, Keene State College and currently teaches at the University of Rhode Island. In addition to his own groups\, he is a long-standing member of several other bands in multiple genres. SUMMARY:Blood Drive at Westbeth: Get T Shirts and Mets Tix for critically needed blood donations
DESCRIPTION:Click to enlarge \nSaturday July 6\, 2024 11am – 5pm\nWestbeth Community Rm\n155 Bank St\nNew York\, NY \nThe West Village Community Blood Drive will partner with New York Blood Center for a blood drive on Saturday\, July 6th\, 2024\, in the Westbeth Community Room from 11am to 5pm. \nHospitals and patients rely upon a steady flow of volunteer donors to receive life-saving donations. Summertime blood drives take on a critical importance because schools are out for summer and families set off on vacation\, New York Blood Center typically sees a decline in donors\, which can impact patient care. With high schools and colleges on break\, those blood drives don’t take place and many regular Donors become busy with Summer activities and vacations. At the same time\, the need for blood remains constant. Hospitals and patients rely upon a steady flow of volunteer donors to receive life-saving donations. Please help meet the needs of patients during the Summer. NYBC encourages all who can donate to sign up. One blood donation can save up to three lives. \nHere’s the Donor Scheduling Link: https://donate.nybc.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/316075 (you copy & paste this link into communications of your preference) \n \nDonors will have a choice to receive either a ‘We All Bleed The Same’ T-shirt or NY Mets T-shirt at the blood drive and a pair of NY Mets Tickets to all Donors which will be fulfilled via Email about 10 days after the blood drive.

SUMMARY:First Friday Music: Berg Jazz John Eckert\, Chris Hemingway\, Cecilia Coleman\, Will Woodard and Andy Watson
DESCRIPTION:Friday July 5\, 2024 at 7pm\nWestbeth Community Rm\n155 Bank St (enter through courtyard\nNew York\, NY \nFree admission \nJohn Eckert trumpet\nChris Hemingway alto sax\nCecilia Coleman piano\nWill Woodard bass\nAndy Watson drums \nDescription of the event: \n“Having seen Wozzeck\, I have been very interested in Berg’s music.\nI was fascinated by his 4 Early Songs\, hearing the most contemporary harmony used by modern Jazz performers throughout these songs written in 1910. I formed a small group to perform this music as Jazz. These songs were written for a vocalist with piano accompaniment. Alto Sax and Trumpet share the vocal melody\, Bass plays the bass line of the piano part. Pianist plays the piano part. Drums intuitively add Jazz rhythm. Generally no material is added\, none is left out.” \nAlban Maria Johannes Berg was an Austrian composer of the Second Viennese School. His compositional style combined Romantic lyricism with the twelve-tone technique. Although he left a relatively small oeuvre\, he is remembered as one of the most important composers of the 20th century for his expressive style encompassing “entire worlds of emotion and structure”. \nBios\nJohn Eckert is one of the busiest freelance trumpet players on the East Coast. He can play it all: jazz\, latin\, pop\, classical\, even opera. John juggles his engagements\, often working one or two recording or rehearsal sessions during a day followed by a bebop big-band gig or an evening at the Carlyle with Bobby Short later that same night.\nJohn has played on concert stages worldwide as well as in orchestra pits of operas and Broadway shows. He is equally comfortable in the lead trumpet chair of a big band or small jazz ensemble\, and enjoys playing all types of music with all kinds of musicians. “The variety just presents itself\,” says John\, explaining how he can play Benny Goodman or Stan Kenton arrangements one day\, then work with the Simon & Garfunkle Reunion Band\, the Smithsonian Jazz Orchestra\, Deodato’s 2001 Orchestra\, or the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra the next. John Eckert \nChris Hemingway\, born in Florence\, SC\, Chris grew up listening to the sounds of gospel\, soul\, R&B\, and blues even though he and his friends weren’t quite accepting of this “old people’s” music. However\, as a product of his own environment Chris eventually came full circle and would later pull from these early listening experiences to develop his overall approach to music today. Chris’ natural fluency in both classical and jazz styles separates him from most musicians.\nIn 2007 Mr. Hemingway won an Emmy Award as a performer of WQED’s (PBS affiliate station) “Live From Studio A.” As a sophomore at Duquesne University\, Chris won the School of Music’s prestigious concerto competition. At the young age of 21\, he was also a featured soloist with the Pittsburgh Symphony. Chris has studied with James Houlik at the North Carolina School of the Arts and at Duquesne University.@chrisheminwaysax \nA native of Long Beach \, California\, Cecilia Coleman started on piano at age five and began jazz piano studies at age fifteen. During the early 1980’s\, she studied with vibraphonist Charlie Shoemake\, arranger Tom Kubis and classical pianist Dr. Allan Giles.\nCecilia has led her own groups since 1990\, when she formed a trio with bassist Eric Von Essen and Kendall Kay on drums. In 1993\, she began working with her quintet. They recorded three CD’s:Words of Wisdom\,Young and Foolish and Home between 1990-1995 . Along with numerous local club and concert appearances\, the quintet also performed at the Monterey and Telluride Jazz Festivals. In 1998\, Coleman moved to New York and has played with a variety of groups as a sideman\, accompanist and leader.\nIn 2010\, Cecilia became a big band leader of some significance and has recorded two CD’s with the Cecilia Coleman Big Band. The 18 piece band continues to play concerts regularly in the NYC area and has been listed in the the Down Beat Critic’s poll as a rising star in the big band category. Cecilia Coleman \nWill Woodard’s big sound\, strong feel and creative approach have made him a welcome presence on stages and bandstands and in recording studios around the world. He’s been blessed with numerous opportunities to work with\, and learn from\, revered masters (Dave Liebman\, Ed Blackwell\, Billy Hart\, Chico Hamilton)\, cherished contemporaries (Walt Weiskopf\, Vince Herring\, Roy Hargrove)\, and great younger players (Chris Potter\, Jon Irabagon). Will just wrapped up the second of two long stints as a member of drummer Rick Hollander’s quartet\, with which he recorded five cds for the Concord\, Timeless and Laika record labels\, two of which featured his compositions\, and with which he toured extensively\, performing in major clubs\, concert halls and festival stages throughout the US\, Europe and Japan. Will Woodward \nAndy Watson has been a fixture on the New York jazz scene for over two decades. He has performed and recorded with an impressive list of artists and groups\, including: Toshiko Akiyoshi\, Bill Frisell\, Benny Golson\, Jim Hall\, Tom Harrell\, Jon Hendricks\, Woody Herman\, Joe Lovano\, Wynton Marsalis\, Marian McPartland\, James Moody\, Marvin Stamm\, Mike Stern\, Lew Tabackin and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. As a member of Jim Hall’s trio\, Andy played on the critically acclaimed recording\, “Dialogues “. All About Jazz magazine called his performance on David Bixler’s “Call It A Good Deal” “one of the top ten for 2006”. Other notable recordings include Jon Hendricks’ “Boppin’ at the Blue Note\,” Toshiko Akiyoshi’s “Hiroshima: Rising from the Abyss\,” Jim Hall’s “Downbeat Critic’s Choice”\, The Westchester Jazz Orchestra’s “Maiden Voyage Suite” and the Telarc compilations “Jazz: Live from New York\,” and “Triple Play: Live From the Blue Note.” Watson has toured extensively throughout the United States\, Europe\, Asia and South America\, appearing at many of the major festivals: Monterey Jazz Festival\, Ravinia\, JVC New York\, Playboy Jazz Fest\, JVC Saratoga\, Zurich Jazz Festival\, and the Vienna Jazz Festival Andy Watson
