SUMMARY:The Twilight of Bohemia: Westbeth and the Last Artists in New York Peter Trachtenberg Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Click to enlarge \nTuesday March 18\, 2025 at 7pm\nWestbeth Comunity Room\n155 Bank St\nNew York\, NY 10014 \nBOOK DESCRIPTION\nAn intimate history of Westbeth\, told through the stories of nine of its artist residents. The Twilight of Bohemia also explores the changing notions of what it means to be a successful artist and the heartbreaking difficulty of surviving as one at our present cultural moment. \nREVIEW EXCERPTS\n“Who would have thought that a book about artist housing in Lower Manhattan would be impossible to put down? The force and beauty and clarity of Peter Trachtenberg’s writing is what makes The Twilight of Bohemia a page-turner about so much more than the characters we meet and the lost world of New York City that it so vividly evokes.”\n— Francine Prose\, Vixen \n“Reading The Twilight of Bohemia\, I had the feeling that its subject—a complex of buildings—had been condensed into book form through some Borgesian literary-alchemical process. This work is elegiac\, intimate\, and wry. Trachtenberg tells interlacing tales of an architectural entity\, artists who have lived as neighbors for fifty years\, an art world that now only exists in New York City’s rear-view mirror\, and a friendship that began in youth and ended with suicide in Westbeth. But the book is also a true historical document\, detailed and precise. And completely crucial.” – Nelly Reifler\, Elect H. Mouse State Judge \n“Beautiful! How often have you read a great book and thought\, ‘Why can’t I live there? Why can’t I live that story?’ . . . Trachtenberg has artfully\, tenderly\, and wisely recreated New York City’s legendary Westbeth artists’ community through the stories of dozens of artists who lived there\, himself included. The result is a messy tale of love and loss anchored in the equally messy act of creation. . . . It is a story that left this reader hungering for more.”\n— Mary Gabriel\, Ninth Street Women: Lee Krasner\, Elaine de Kooning\, Grace Hartigan\, Joan Mitchell\, and Helen Frankenthaler: Five Painters and the Movement That Changed Modern Art \nBIO\nPeter Trachtenberg is the author of the memoir 7 Tattoos\, The Book of Calamities: Five Questions About Suffering and Its Meaning\, and Another Insane Devotion\, a 2012 New York Times Editors’ Choice. His honors include Whiting and Guggenheim Fellowships and the Nelson Algren Award for Short Fiction. He is a professor emeritus in the Writing Program of the University of Pittsburgh. He has been connected to Westbeth since the 1970s and lived in the building from 1995 to 2006.

SUMMARY:FIRST FRIDAYS MUSIC JOHN MENEGON QUARTET 'SOUND EMBRACE'
DESCRIPTION:Click to enlarge[/caption]Friday\, January 3\, 2025 at 7pm \nWestbeth Community Room\n155 Bank St\n(enter through courtyard_\nNew York NY 10014 \nThe music presented by Bassist/Composer/Educator John Menegon\, in collaboration with these exceptional musicians\, pushes the boundaries of today’s music on the world stage. The intuitive\, spontaneous nature of the music between the musicians in the Quartet is deeply rooted in the traditions that come out of the Free Bop era created in the “Moment Of Now!” \n\n\nJOHN MENEGON (bass & compositions)\nSTEVE EINERSON (piano)\nPETE SMITH (guitar)\nMATT GARRITY (drums)\nspecial guest ANGUS MENEGON (voice\, synthesizers & compositions) \nJOHN MENEGON (bass & compositions)\n“New York bassist JOHN MENEGON is in the line of George Mraz and Michael Moore; a harmonically sophisticated bassist with technical facility who swings hard when it’s called for.” Kirk Silsbee\, DOWNBEAT!\nMenegon is a jazz bassist\, but is also a guitarist\, arranger\, singer\, and composer. He began his career as a musician in Montreal before moving to New York City\, where he spent ten years as bassist for two legendary tenor saxophonists\, Dewey Redman and David “Fathead” Newman. This experience provided a solid foundation for Menegon to continue his explorations as a bandleader\, composer and arranger\, and he has been composing and arranging music throughout his career. Menegon has released 6 recordings as a bandleader\, and his latest recording\, SOUND EMBRACE\, was released in 2024 on Valley Jazz Records. It features Jean-Michel Pilc on piano\, Chet Doxas on sax\, and Jim Doxas on drums. Here is what Abe Goldstein had to say about John’s latest recording on his blog PAPATAMUS REDUX (NOV 2024): “Although he is known primarily for his bass playing with folks such as David Fathead Newman\, Dewey Redman\, Joe Lovano\, and other notable musicians (not to mention his own recordings)\, Sound Embrace showcases Menegon’s exceptional writing skills. Let’s not forget the strong\, lyrical and harmonically- advanced bass playing of Menegon as a soloist or intuitively interacting with the ensemble.”\n@johnmenegonjazz \nSTEVE EINERSON (piano)\nPianist Steve Einerson originally hails from Milwaukee (WI) where he spent three formative years studying with David Hazeltine. After freelancing in the Milwaukee/Chicago circuit for several years\, he relocated to New York City in 2004\, fresh off the heels of being selected as a finalist to compete in the national jazz piano competition sponsored by the American Pianists Association. Whether it’s solo piano\, small groups or big bands\, Steve now finds his services in NYC in high demand and has performed at venues and jazz festivals across the country and around the world. A sampling of some of the musicians he’s had the privilege of working with include Marlena Shaw\, Joe Farnsworth\, Philip Harper\, Killer Ray Appleton\, Slide Hampton\, Ian Hendrickson-Smith\, John Dokes\, Hilary Gardner\, Teri Roiger\, the George Gee Orchestra\, and the Cab Calloway Orchestra.\n@seinerson \nPETE SMITH (guitar)\n“Mr. Smith is something rare\, fair and fine…a consummate musician who makes an unsuspecting audience aware that his guitar is not his instrument – it is his partner and musical mate for life – Mr. Smith exhibited skills that would make a symphony conductor salivate.” Stephen Mosher\nPete Smith is a New York City-based guitarist who performs in a wide range of musical settings. As a founding member of Grupo los Santos\, a vanguard Afro-Cuban and Brazilian-style quartet\, he has played New York’s Town Hall and concerts throughout the U.S.\, Cuba & Austria. Pete has performed at the Berlin Jazz Festival and Montreal Jazz Festival\, as well as concerts in thirty countries throughout Europe\, Eastern Europe\, Africa and Asia. He has worked with Norah Jones\, trumpeter Donald Byrd\, Cuban trombone master Juan Pablo Torres\, Andrew Hill\, Kat Edmonson\, Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks\, the Moonlighters\, Madeline Peyroux\, Natalie Merchant and Huun-Huur-Tu\, and is a member of Michael Feinstein’s Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. In 2023 he traveled to Congo-Kinshasa as a member of the band Opius Bliss—as cultural ambassadors for the US Embassy—to perform for and teach\, play and dialogue with local musicians in Kinshasa and Kisangani.\n@peteguitarsmith \nMATT GARRITY (drums)\n“Matt is a swinging drummer and true keeper of the flame.” Vincent Herring\, saxophonist\nDrummer Matt Garrity has been on the New York City music scene since 1994. He has performed with some of the best in the business\, including Grammy winner Vincent Herring\, David Williams\, Teri Thornton\, Peter Bernstein\, Gary Versace\, Ed Cherry\, Ben Monder\, Jeremy Pelt\, among others. Garrity has been living in the Hudson Valley since 2017 and produces a concert series out of his home/studio in Woodstock called BARNSTOCK.\n@garritydrums \nANGUS MENEGON (vocals\, synthesizers\, compositions)\nMonolounge is the synth-punched\, reverb-soaked vision of Australian songwriter-producer Angus Menegon. Crafting dream-pop from his bedroom\, Monolounge melts 70s drums\, 80s synthesisers\, and 90s guitars into a melancholic journey through time. Angus did all the composing and playing on all 9 tracks of his debut recording KILLING TIME. It was released on Bandcamp in September 2024.\nhttps://ihatemonolounge.bandcamp.com/album/killing-time\nWebSite: www.ihatemonolounge.com\n@ihatemonolounge

DESCRIPTION:Click to enlarge Friday Nov 22\, 2024 at 7pm \nWestbeth Communioty Room\n155 Bank St\nenter through courtyard\nNew York\, NY \nGet to Know Your Neighbors is a free monthly program which showcases the work of Westbeth artist residents. It is produced by Westbeth Artists Residents Council\, and hosted by Robert Bunkin\, artist and curator. \nJonathan Bauch sculptor Jis a New York City native\, who began his artistic career as an abstract painter\, graduating from Parsons School of Design and later studying at NYU and SVA. Following his need for more interaction and movement in his work\, his artistic focus evolved from painting to sculpture in the late 1960s. He worked with different sculptural materials\, such as wire mesh\, plaster and aluminum until 1996\, when he began working in steel and found a comfort in the medium and a freedom in both technique and composition he had not previously experienced. \nPele Bauch is an interdisciplinary choreographer who weaves dance\, theater\, and installation design into unique performances. Bauch’s work has been selected for presentation at many New York venues. She has received residencies from The Joyce Theater Foundation; Dance Theater Workshop; Chocolate Factory; and 92Y Harkness Dance Center. Funders include the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council; Brooklyn Arts Council; and Harkness Foundation for Dance. Trained as a modern dancer\, Bauch draws from additional studies in fine arts\, Oli (Hawaiian Chant)\, and Hula\, as well as from her Hapa Haole Kanaka Maoli (multi-racial Native Hawaiian) heritage. \nLilly Rivlin is an American- Israeli journalist\, writer\, and filmmaker in the genre of documentary/ political films on women’s issue. This film documents the evolution of the Jewish feminism through the Feminist Seder; “Grace Paley: Collected Shorts”\, (2010) is an intimate portrait of writer\, activist and New York icon Grace Paley (1922-2007)\, whose frank and brilliant stories celebrating the authentic\, daily lives of women are classics of American literature; Can You Hear Me? Israeli And Palestinian Women Fight For Peace (2006)\,[4] narrated by Debra Winger\, depicts the true realities of women who seek peace and change; :Gimme a Kiss” (2000)- Screened at the 2001 Jerusalem Film Festival.[5] A 38-minute film\, which raises issues about the destructive power of family secrets.

DESCRIPTION:Click to enlarge Friday Oct 25\, 2024 at 7pm\nWestbeth Commuity Room\n155 Bank St\nenter through courtyard\nNew York\, NY \nArnold Hinton’s photography focuses on social justice and humanity\, drawing parallels between the racism and oppression experienced by Jews in concentration camps to the experience of African Americans. He visited concentration camps in Berlin and Vienna. “In America if you were Black\, you were a slave\, you picked cotton and sugar cane and that was it\,” said Arnold. “But to see how the Germans built these camps/houses with sinks and toilets and wash basins for people that you were going to annihilate– to me\, it made no logical sense.” Despite facing his own share of systemic barriers and societal prejudices\, his work conveys a sense of activism and empathy\, calling for a dialogue that bridges the past to the present. \nMei-Yin Ng Focusing initially on modern movement as inner being\, Ng’s work continues to evolve with the possibilities of contemporary technologies. Her extensive prop training in Chinese dance inspired her to meditate on the use of props\, and later technology\, as an extension of the human form. She founded MEI-BE WHATever in 2002 as a collective field for collaboration and experimentation of technology in just this vein. MEI-BE WHATever has performed at festivals\, museums and theatres in US\, Asia\, Europe\, North and south America. \nSiaka Hinton “My screenplays\, in sum\, nurture characters\, birthed by phenomena and landscapes\, which I absorb each day. Because of my fervor and devotion to heart and spine of each story\, I feel them vividly\, which is what motivated me to create in school\, and will continue to drive me\, like a trusted collaborative hand\, tending to the life and soul of every creation.”
