SUMMARY:The Portrait Project: Robert Bunkin\, Jenny Tango and more
DESCRIPTION:Dec. 3\, 2022 – January 30\, 2023\nHudson Park Library continues its exhibition program in 2022-23 with The Portrait Project\, a collaboration of eleven artists who focus on portraiture. \nFounded by Howard Gladstone\, The Portrait Project encourages artists to represent fellow artist members in their work\, by posing for each other. The group began in 2012\, and has since had 2 exhibitions and programs together\, presenting the fruits of their exchanges and a forum for their ideas. \nThe Project started as a way to solve several problems\, providing: a means for artists to work from life without the expense of professional models; an opportunity to portray people from life without the obligation to flatter; and a laboratory to learn from each other’s approaches. Exhibitions of the group’s work offer a resource\, bringing greater exposure to viewers from the entire group’s shared contacts. \nEleven artists’ works will be shown: Robert Bunkin\, Leonid Gervits\, Valerie\nGillett\, Howard Gladstone\, Karen Kaapcke\, Sharon Moreau\, Dena Schutzer\,\nDonna Skebo\, Jenny Tango\, Clarissa Payne Uvegi and Yu Zhang.\nThe exhibition includes recent oils and smaller works on paper. Artworks can be purchased directly from the artists.\nThe exhibition will open to the public on Saturday\, Dec. 3. \nThe artists’ reception will take place on Saturday\, December 17\, from 2 – 5 PM. \nTwo programs will also offer more in-depth experiences with the exhibition: \n A guided tour led by Robert Bunkin with in-put from some of the artists\,\nSaturday\, January 7\, 2023 from 2-4 PM \n Artists’ roundtable discussion about issues in contemporary\nportraiture\, Saturday\, January 21\, 2023\, 2-4 PM. \nThe exhibition is located in the main floor rear adult reading room. All of Hudson Park Library’s exhibitions and programs are free to the public. \nLibrary hours are Monday-Friday 10-6; Saturday 10-5; closed Sunday. \nThe Library is located at 66 Leroy Street\, New York\, NY 10014. Tel. 212 243-6876.\nPublic transit: nearest subway stop is at Houston Street\, #1 train.

SUMMARY:Gayle Kirschenbaum: The World I See Exhibit and Walkthrough
DESCRIPTION:ARTIST STATEMENT \nSince an early age\, I was filled with wanderlust. I grew up near JFK airport. When we went to pick my parents up from a trip\, people were arriving from other countries who looked and dressed differently. I was curious to learn about them. Where are they from? What do they eat? What are their customs? My travels began when I was fifteen and I went to Europe for the first time to study art. I was hooked and have continued to travel the world. I soon developed a reputation for having my own United Nations. For me communication and connection are important. If we could understand each other\, we can create bonds\, not wars. \nTHE WORLD I SEE is an exhibit that includes images from three recent foreign trips: Colombia\, Iceland\, and France. The photos of France were shot during the winter in Dordogne\, the south of France. I was captivated by the old stone buildings and the landscapes. I love capturing images when the sun is setting or rising as it cast its golden light. When I was in Iceland\, at the end of September\, the weather was cold\, windy\, and rainy. As I stood shooting the wind was strong as the rain came down. There was magic in it all. The churches and Icelandic horses. Colombia was filled with color but the images selected include a man mopping the tile floor of a hotel and nuns being photographed in the square in Bogota. \nI love to connect with people through their eyes. The series of portraits are moments I made those connections. And then there are selfies. Discovering a bird perched on a rock by the ocean as the sun rises behind it\, I position myself so we are all in the frame. \nI never know when I will see a beautiful moment that could be fleeting so I grab it and memoralize it forever. The sun moving as it reflects on the textured wall\, a person walking into the light\, or a shadow casted creating an unusual pattern on the pavement. \nAs an artist who creates in several mediums\, I am a constant observer of life. I invite my viewer\, my audience to experience the world as I see it\, to feel what I feel\, and to find their own personal connection. It is my mission through my work whether in photography\, film\, or prose to take people on my journey and bring knowledge and joy.
