DESCRIPTION:Thursday March 26\, 2026 12:30 – 2pm \nWestbeth Community Space\n155 Bank St\n(enter through courtyard)\nNew York\, NY 10014 \nAfter the success of ABOVE GROUND – NOT EXACTLY A COMEDY on the theme of AGING\, at La Mama Experimental Theatre Club in 2025\,You’re Never Too Old to Play – An Acting workshop for Seniors\, is working on a new piece on the theme of DEPARTURE. \nWe invite you to join us to observe an OPEN WORKSHOP on Thursday March 26 th from 12:30 – 2:00 PM in the Westbeth Community Room: \nIMPROVISATION\, WORK-IN-PROGRESS STORIES\nand a\nREADING of a SHORT PLAY BY BERTOLT BRECHT by the conductors of the workshop\nNANCY GABOR AND PAUL BINNERTS: THE JEWISH WIFE. A PIECE FOR THE TIME WE LIVE IN. \nReview of Aging at La Mama by Edward Kliszus\n“…actors do not pretend; they are. They acknowledge the audience\, inviting them into their world rather than asking them to suspend disbelief. The stage is not a place of illusion but a living space where truth materializes without pretense. In this environment\, every movement\, every breath\, every interaction becomes significant—an authentic exchange between performer and observer.”\n“The Artists Behind the Experience\nNancy Gabor\, a distinguished director and theater educator\, brings decades of experience to the project. A former member of Joseph Chaikin’s Open Theater\, she was pivotal in developing experimental works like The Serpent. Her collaborations with luminaries such as Andrei Serban and Sam Shepard have cemented her legacy in avant-garde theater.\n‘Paul Binnerts\, co-director\, and Real-Time Acting theorist\, has spent his career exploring performance’s intersection with reality. His European award-winning productions\, including Black Box and The Same Sea\, reflect his commitment to theater that challenges and engages. His seminal work\, Acting in Real Time\, is a foundational text for this performance genre.

DESCRIPTION:You’re Never Too Old to Play Current  Cast ..Click to enlarge \nYOU'RE NEVER TOO OLD TO PLAY started as an acting workshop 5 years ago for seniors of 65 and older. It was open to actors and non-actors alike. We now wantto expand the group and invite new participants. \nIn the past five years we have made three pieces\, two of which we performed at\nthe Glade\, the small theatre on Little Island. The third one\, based on the theme of aging and entitled ABOVE GROUND (Not Exactly a Comedy)\, we performed in the Community Room of Westbeth\, where it was met with great enthusiasm by the audience. \nTo explore intergenerational dynamics\, and to create a new piece\, we are opening the group up to ages 40-60 years\, along with some new seniors as well.  \n\n\nNANCY GABOR and PAUL BINNERTS\, directors/acting teachers of YOU’RE NEVER\nTOO OLD TO PLAY\, are inviting interested people to join the group for a project based on a theme yet to be defined. The theme will appeal to both participating generations. \nThe work will focus on physical and vocal exercises\, and improvisations\nemphasizing play and ensemble (Nancy's Core Technique)\, and crafting a story (Paul's Acting in Real Time). Central in this work is the presence of the actor.\nWe will conduct a workshop from October to Christmas\, for new members\, to get to know the group and to integrate into it. Commitment is necessary. The new piece explores\nthrough improvisation\, music and dance\, the process of getting older with humor and love\,\nsharing childhood memories along with present issues of aging. \nAmong Nancy’s credits: collaborator with Joseph Chaikin and Sam Shepard; director of over 100\nplays in NYC and abroad.\nPaul\, a renowned Dutch stage director\, playwright and teacher\n(awards: Theatertreffen 2006\, Halle/Berlin for The Same Sea\, Theaterfestival 2006\, Amsterdam\nfor Mephisto) is the author of Acting in Real Time\, University of Michigan Press (2012).\nNancy and Paul are long time Westbeth residents.
