SUMMARY:John Menegon Trio"Belongings" music performance
DESCRIPTION:Sunday April 12\, 2026. 7pm – 9pm \nWestbeth Community Room\n155 Bank Street\n(enter through courtyard)\nNew York\, NY 10014 \nJohn Menegon Trio: “Belongings”\nJohn Menegon (bass & compositions) @johnmenegon\nLeo Genovese (piano) @leogenovese\nHarvey Sorgen (drums) @harveysorgen \nIt was 2012\, during a celebration of the late drummer Jack DeJohnette’s 70th birthday (produced by Jazzstock)\, where Harvey\, Leo\, and John (who all had a close relationship with Jack) played for a celebration of one of the most influential drummers of our time. It was at this event that our relationship as a Trio began and led us to this group’s exploration of sound and discovery. \n“Belongings” refers to the ownership of sentimental objects. We all seek to belong\, and our Musical Language is what connects us. The object that we share is our music! Our collective pairings over the years with pianist Marilyn Crispell\, saxophonist Joe Lovano\, drummer Jack DeJohnette\, and countless others\nare what bind us together as a group. New music will be recorded on April 13th and released this spring on a label TBA! \nA debut performance of this music will be presented in New York City at\nWestbeth Community Room (155 Bank Street) on Sunday\, APRIL 12th (7\n‘til 9 pm)\nSponsored by “Jazzstock Festival” \nJOHN MENEGON (bass & compositions)\n“New York bassist John Menegon is in the line of George Mraz and Michael Moore; a\nharmonically sophisticated bassist with technical facility who swings hard when it’s\ncalled for.” Kirk Silsbee\, Downbeat!\nMenegon is a Jazz Bassist\, multi-instrumentalist\, and composer. He began his career\nas a musician in Montreal\, playing in groups with the great guitarist Nelson Symonds\,\npianist Vic Vogel\, and guitarist Sonny Greenwich. After relocating to New York City\, he\nplayed bass for over ten years with two legendary tenor saxophonists\, Dewey Redman\nand Texas Tenor David “Fathead” Newman. Menegon has released six CDs as a\nbandleader featuring Dewey Redman\, Frank Kimbrough\, Jean-Michel Pilc\, Joel Frahm\,\nMatt Wilson\, Kenny Burrell\, Jack DeJohnette\, Teri Roiger\, John Di Martino\, John\nGunther\, Tineke Postma\, and many others. He currently plays with jazz legend Joe\nLovano’s “Joyous Encounters” Quartet as well as numerous other stellar musicians. As\nan educator\, he spent over 20 years teaching in the Jazz Department at SUNY New\nPaltz (NY)\, and also taught at Williams College\, Bard\, and Bennington. Menegon’s\nlatest recording as a leader “Sound Embrace\,” released in 2024\, features his original\ncompositions with Jean-Michel Pilc on piano\, Chet Doxas on sax\, and Jim Doxas on\ndrums. “Although Sound Embrace showcases Menegon’s exceptional writing skills\, let’s\nnot forget the strong\, lyrical\, and harmonically advanced bass playing of Menegon as a\nsoloist intuitively interacting with the ensemble. There is something very special\nabout Sound Embrace.” Abe Goldstein\, Papatamus Redux.\n@johnmenegon\nwww.valleyjazzrecords.com \nLEO GENOVESE (piano)\nLeo Genovese (born 1979) is an acclaimed Argentinian jazz pianist\, keyboardist\, and\ncomposer based in Brooklyn\, NY. Known for his work with Esperanza Spalding\, Wayne\nShorter\, and Jack DeJohnette\, he is a prolific artist blending jazz with free improvisation.\nA Berklee College of Music graduate\, he leads his own projects and is a key figure in\nthe NYC avant-garde scene. A reviewer for The New York Times commented on\nGenovese's 2013 album\, Seeds\, that\, "by refusing to privilege one historical style over\nanother\, he strengthens his claim as a polyglot".  DownBeat  observed that Genovese's\ncompositions for the album "share an exploratory nature\, whether the new terrain in\nquestion is a marriage of electronic and acoustic sounds\, an unlikely use of chromatic\nscaling or the successful juxtaposition of otherwise disparate ideas."\nWayne Shorter & Leo Genovese (soloist) won a Grammy Award for Best Improvised\nJazz Solo for the Wayne Shorter composition "Endangered Species" for which Leo\naccompanied him on the album Live at the Detroit Jazz Festival. Genovese won\nthe  DownBeat  Critics Award for Rising Star – Piano in 2023.\n@leogenovese \nHARVEY SORGEN (drums)\nIn sound\, motion\, and beauty . . . so to lay the groundwork for truth. I am eternally\ngrateful to have created honest music with some of the greatest artists of our time. With\nover 200 record credits\, just a few of the artists I have had the good fortune to record\nand/or perform with include: Hot Tuna\, Ahmad Jamal\, Paul Simon\, Roswell Rudd\,\nMichelle Shocked\, Tony Levin\, Julius Hemphill\, Giovanni Hildago\, Zakir Hussain\,\nWadada Leo Smith\, Bruce Hornsby\, Bob Weir\, Phil Lesh\, Dave Douglas\, Duanik Lazro\,\nKarl Berger\, Marilyn Crispell\, Percy Heath\, Warren Haynes\, The Memphis Pilgrims\,\nAnthony Braxton\, and Dewey Redman\, among many\, many others. Through touring for\nover 45 years\, it’s always astonishing to see the level of creativity in our music\nhappening around the globe. Giving workshops and master classes continues to inspire\nand helps to focus on what is important on our instrument and in the music.\nwww.harveysorgen.com\n@harveysorgen
