SUMMARY:Marya Zimmet: A Sorta Kinda CD Release Show
DESCRIPTION:Click to enlarge \nSunday May 5\, 2024 at 7PM\nWestbeth Community Room\n55 Bethune St\nb/s Washington and West Sts\nNY \nMarya Zimmet\nGrowing up with artist/hippie/lefty parents and an older sister in Chelsea and Greenwich Village\, the house was filled with the sounds of Billie Holiday\, Lead Belly\, Judy Garland\, and the singer-songwriters and bands of the 60s and early 70s. Dad bought me a guitar at age 11 and I studied finger-style guitar. I moved to San Francisco with mom at age 14\, and in my late teen years took my first singing lessons. At twenty-one I moved back to NYC\, studying jazz at City College and discovering The Great American Songbook. Then followed a brief (33-year) detour to pursue a doctoral degree and career as a school psychologist\, during which time I engaged in varied musical endeavors: a 5-woman folk group\, a couple of jazz trios\, and the creation and performance of several cabaret shows. \nI launched my first CD project just before the pandemic hit\, and completed it in spring 2021. A mere 3 years later\, I’m puttin’ on a show! I’ll be doing several songs from the CD and a bouquet of additional jazz\, folk and pop standards\, each given a fresh spin by the wonderful trio with whom I’ll be performing. \nNicki Adams\, Piano and Musical Direction\nEddy Khaimovich\, Bass\nEvan Hyde\, Drums\nDirected by Barry Kleinbort

They have also been sharing their knowledge and inspiration with their diverse students for over 25 years. Their numerous recordings have all met with critical acclaim\, as have their live performances at festivals and top New York jazz spots (Birdland\, Kitano\, Dizzy’s\, Mezzrow\, Jazz Standard\, Café Bohemia). \nIn 2021 Teri & John released an album SHINE A BRIGHT LIGHT on their new label Valley Jazz Records with a new group called SHARP 5\, a collaboration with Pete Levin\, Nanny Assis & Jeff Siegel. Teri’s previous releases include GHOST OF YESTERDAY: SHADES OF LADY DAY where Teri showcases her uncommon knowledge\, appreciation\, and deep love for the artistry of Billie Holiday. Her recording DEAR ABBEY: THE MUSIC OF ABBEY LINCOLN with arrangements by Menegon\, met with great critical acclaim\, as did STILL LIFE where her composition “Still Life” won 3rd prize in the jazz category of the acclaimed songwriting competition ISC. Teri & John’s first collaboration\, MISTERIOSO\, included jazz legends Jack DeJohnette and Kenny Burrell\, and Teri was given permission to publish her own lyrics to Monk’s iconic composition “Misterioso.” \nJohn spent ten years playing and recording with jazz legends David “Fathead” Newman and Dewey Redman\, and currently plays with jazz legend Joe Lovano as well as leading his own band. He has released five CDs as a leader\, including “I Remember You” (a dedication to Redman and Newman) with a four-star review in Downbeat\, and his latest “Quartet East: Blew By Blues\,” a dedication to Charlie Haden. \nSTEVE BERGER (guitarist) New Jersey born Berger studied with Barry Harris and Tal Farlow and has been active as an accompanist\, sideman & leader in the New York music scene for the past several decades. Currently he is actively playing in a Trio in New York City with vocalist Teri Roiger & bassist John Menegon. \nIn the event of rain\, concert will take place in the Westbeth Community Room.
