He served in World War II as a navigator on bombing missions in Europe\, and after the war\, briefly assayed an acting career—while also working as a typist. Meanwhile the poet in him blossomed\, and in 1963\, Grove Press published Field’s first poetry collection\, Stand Up\, Friend\, with Me.
