SUMMARY:DAVID GREENSPAN. FOUR SAINTS IN THREE ACTS
DESCRIPTION:“I will be performing my solo rendition of Gertrude Stein’s Four Saints in Three Acts September 15 – October 9. The play is being produced by the Lucille Lortel Foundation – and hosted by Target Margin Theater at their Doxie space in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn. See below for tickets – as low as $15. \nThis production is the result of a 4-year collaboration with director Ken Rus Schmoll – and the culmination of an 11-year project I began with my solo rendition of Barry Conner’s The Patsy\, followed by my solo rendition of Eugene O’Neill’s Strange Interlude. Four Saints completes this trilogy: three radically different plays – all written in the late 1920’s. \nI’ll tell you up front: the play features no discernible story – and there is little indication of characterization. Stein eschewed story and action for what she called “emotion and time.” If that sounds highfalutin – trust me it’s not. It’s playful\, it’s tender\, it’s dramatic and poignant. \nThe play runs 90 minutes without a single trim. I sure hope you can attend. I think you’ll have a heck of a good time.” \n– David Greenspan \nPreviews: September 15 – 18\, 2022\nPerformances: September 19 – October 9\, 2022\nLocation\nThe Doxsee at Target Mrgin Theater\n232 52nd Street\nBrooklyn\, NY \nTickets:\nPay-what-you-can pricing of\n $15\, $25 or $35\, with open seating\nlortel.org/four-saints-in-three-acts

SUMMARY:John Jasperse World Premier Visitation
DESCRIPTION:Choreographed by John Jasperse\, Visitation was created in collaboration with performers Tim Bendernagel\, Cynthia Koppe\, and Doug LeCours with original music by composer-collaborator Hahn Rowe and recorded music by Richard Wagner and lighting design by Stan Pressner. Photography: Maria Baranova \n\nVISITATION\nChoreographed by John Jasperse \nSeptember 9 and 10\, 2022 at 7:30PM\nNYU Skirball presents John Jasperse Projects\, in the world premiere of Visitation\, a new dance that is part seance and part exorcism\, on Friday\, September 9 and Saturday\, September 10 at 7:30 pm. Choreographed by John Jasperse\, Visitation was created in collaboration with performers Tim Bendernagel\, Cynthia Koppe\, and Doug LeCours with original music by composer-collaborator Hahn Rowe and recorded music by Richard Wagner and lighting design by Stan Pressner. \nVisitation loosely draws on spiritualism\, mesmerism\, the occult\, hysteria\, and the exoticization of myth. The dance vacillates between pensive\, introspective sensing and lush\, at times even rhapsodic\, sequences of cascading movement that verge on camp. By channeling ghosts\, the dance moves from present day\, into the past\, and back again. Original music by Jasperse’s long-time collaborator Hahn Rowe is interspersed with orchestral fragments from various operas by Richard Wagner. \nChoreographed by John Jasperse\, Visitation was created in collaboration with performers Tim Bendernagel\, Cynthia Koppe\, and Doug LeCours with original music by composer-collaborator Hahn Rowe and recorded music by Richard Wagner and lighting design by Stan Pressner. Photography: Maria Baranova \nThe complex\, polarizing figure of Wagner and his music functions with Visitation as both occasional musical accompaniment and an historical object; as the dance sinks into the sweeping chromaticism of Wagner’s immersive sound\, we cannot help but recall how the power of his music\, and the emotions that it conjured\, were appropriated in support of pivotal historical actions\, at times heinously destructive and at other times emancipatory. As we emerge from this musical time-traveling into the present\, we are left to ponder how our own feelings carry us into action as we shape our collective future. \nJohn Jasperse has been working as a dance artist in New York City for 37 years. He has created nineteen evening-length works with John Jasperse Projects as well as numerous commissions for other companies including Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project\, Batsheva Dance Company\, and Lyon Opera Ballet. John Jasperse Projects has been presented in 26 U.S. cities and 29 countries. He is the recipient of a 2014 Doris Duke Artist Award and two Bessie awards (2014 and 2001)\, among many other accolades. Jasperse is co-founder of CPR—Center for Performance Research in Brooklyn\, New York and is Director of Dance at Sarah Lawrence College. \nThe creation of Visitation as well as its performances at NYU Skirball and other activities of John Jasperse Projects are supported\, in part\, by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Cultural Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, the New York State Council on the Arts\, the James E. Robison Foundation\, the Kyle J. Mulrooney Foundation\, the Lion & Hare Foundation\, a Late Stage Production Grant from the Joyce Mertz-Gilmore Foundation\, and individual contributions. Residency support was provided by Sarah Lawrence College.\nABOUT NYU SKIRBALL \nNYU Skirball\, located in the heart of Greenwich Village\, is one of New York City’s major presenters of international work\, and has been the premier venue for cultural and performing arts events in lower Manhattan since 2003. SUMMARY:Christina Maile and Ann Hamilton in Framing the Village Group Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Opening Tuesday Sept 6\, 2022 from 6PM – 8PM\nReservations: www.framing.eventbrite.com \nSept 7 – Sept 30\, 2022\nRevelation Gallery\n218 West 11th Street\nNYC \nCurated by Mark Kehoe\, Framing the Village group exhibition at the Revelation Gallery at St John’s in the Village\, demonstrates that the arts continue to flourish across Greenwich Village and the East Village. The show features the work of more than 30 painters and photographers who either live in or have close ties with the area bounded by !4th and Houston Streets\, and the Hudson and East Rivers. Embracing oil painting\, watercolor\, analog and digital photography\, all the work in Framing the Village – the inaugural Village Trip art show – has been created by living artists who continue to be inspired by neighborhoods that have been a center of fine arts since the late 19th century. \nChristina Maile “Mom” \n“Mom” was taken on Hudson Street near Perry St. To me\, it resonates with the idea of Greenwich Village as a place where people escaped repression\, intolerance and misunderstanding – things often associated with their families. Symbolized by the disposal of the “old news” about themselves along with the mythic ties to “Mom”\, the photo is a proclamation of liberation. \nChristina Maile is a writer\, printmaker\, and a landscape architect. She has received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant\, a Joan Mitchell Studio Grant and was twice awarded a Miriam Chaikin Foundation Grant for Writing.\nchristinamaile.com\ninstagram @mailestudios \n \nAnn Hamilton is a mixed media artist and clothing designer. Her work combines mixed media with found objects\, incorporating watercolor\, hand knitting\, stitching\, and vintage fabric.\nannhamiltontextileart.com\ninstagram @ah-_textile_art \n“Framing the Village” is part of the Villge Trip Festival 2022\n \nMore Info at: https://www.thevillagetrip.com/program-2022/

SUMMARY:Barbara Slitkin Elsewhere NYAC Group Show
DESCRIPTION:The New York Artists Circle presents Elsewhere\, an exhibition that traverses the dimensions outside of our immediate present\, featuring the work of 25 NYAC visual artists. Curated by Hayley Ferber\, on view from Thursday\, September 1\, 2022 – Monday\, October 31\, 2022 on the NYAC website. \nElsewhere evokes a place or state of mind outside of our current condition\, a realm of mystery\, longing\, fear or comfort. These works dictate a sense of place through color\, shape and texture\, resulting in a nebulous impression that feels familiar and alien all at once. \nThe artists in this exhibit meditate on the meaning of “place”\, exploring the physical\, philosophical and spiritual interpretations. Reflecting on universal elements of reality as well as abstract and intangible concepts\, these artists depict ideas of identity\, time\, and space through their works\, seeking to understand fundamental truths about their relationships to the world. \n Please join us! You’re invited on the artists’ journeys of discovery and reflection to Elsewhere. \nArtists\nMarianne Barcellona\, Fran Beallor\, Irene Christensen\, Jane Dell\, Karen Fitzgerald\, Lynne Friedman\, David Alon Friedman\, Pearl Rosen Golden\, Eleanor Goldstein\, Norma Greenwood\, Susan Grucci\, Alice Harrison\, Arthur Kvarnstrom\,\nAida Markiw\, Kristin Reed\, Jacqueline Sferra Rada\, Holly Meeker Rom\,\nGale Rothstein\, Ann R. SUMMARY:The Kitchen Will Spend Creative Time at Westbeth
DESCRIPTION:Photo:A 1972 installation by the Kitchen at its first home\, in the Mercer Arts Center. Credit…Ben Tatti Two storied New York City arts organizations\, both with origins in the early 1970s\, will soon share a roof\, as the Kitchen temporarily relocates to Westbeth Artist Housing. The Kitchen announced the move on Thursday. \nFounded as an artist collective in 1971\, the Kitchen is one of the city’s oldest nonprofit art centers dedicated to avant-garde and cross-disciplinary work. Its home in Chelsea will be undergoing a two-year renovation (designed by Rice+Lipka Architects)\, necessitating the short-term move\, starting in late September. \nWestbeth was founded in 1970\, when buildings in the West Village previously used by Bell Laboratories were converted into affordable housing and studios for artists and their families. The landmark buildings also house the New School for Drama\, the Martha Graham Dance Company and much history. The loft space that the Graham company took over 10 years ago was long home to the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. The Kitchen will be using the West Side Loft\, a 6\,000-foot loft space on the fourth floor. \n“It’s a special space\,” said Legacy Russell\, who became the Kitchen’s executive director and chief curator last year. “It’s a version of New York that many folks come to the city with hopes of experiencing. So much of the history of the interdisciplinary avant-garde has that kind of loft space as its birthplace.” \n-Brian Seibert\nAugust 26\, 2022\nNew York Times \nREAD THE FULL ARTICLE HERE \nPhoto on Home Page:A vision of the New York avant-garde: The loft at Westbeth that will serve as a home to the Kitchen.Credit…The Kitchen

SUMMARY:Living the Westbeth Life: Ethan Mass\, Stephen Hall\, Karen Santry Interviewed
DESCRIPTION:Residents of the downtown artists’ housing reflect on their home and work spaces\nStephen Hall contemporary painter with emphasis on climate change \n“[It is] really the best\, greatest moment of your life.” \nAfter decades on a waitlist\, residents like Karen Santry recall a seemingly destined\, life-changing moment: getting a phone call from Westbeth Artists Housing. \nFor any artist in New York\, rent is often a roadblock to creative work in the city. Many artists dream about the day they are offered a loft in the West Village for a fraction of the neighborhood’s average rent. \nKaren Santry fine arts painter\, illustrator\, associate professor \nIt is rare to find a place like Westbeth\, a 52-year-old housing complex named for its location at the intersection of Bethune and West Streets. The nonprofit is one of the few spaces that financially and emotionally supports artists at any point in their creative careers\, providing residents with both housing and workspaces. The building helps free artists from many of the financial stressors that prevent them from prioritizing their creative work. Once off the waitlist\, most never leave. \nEthan Mass cinematographer of both creative pursuits and commercial films Describing the building itself is a near impossible task\, as it encapsulates the roaring\, creative\, and mystical quality of New York\, in addition to creating a community of connected values. Many of the artists who arrive would not be able to imagine their lives without the financial freedom Westbeth provides. Beyond providing loft-style housing for artists\, there are gallery spaces\, studios and events hosted in the building. Its fascinating history begins with its purchase from Bell Laboratories in the 1960s. After renovation\, it opened to its first residents in 1970. \n– Maya Olsen West Village for Our Town 17 August 2022 \nRead the entire article in Our Town

SUMMARY:Valerie Ghent When the Birds Stopped Singing Music in support of people of Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Robert Hale \nVALERIE GHENT shows support for the people of Ukraine with her new single ‘When the Birds Stop Singing’ \nWhen the Birds Stopped Singing is an anti-war song I wrote in March 2022 at the beginning of the war in Ukraine. Some of my ancestors come from Ukraine and Russia\, and my grandmother and her sisters fled St. Petersburg on foot in 1919. I’ve often wondered what my grandmother went through in order to survive\, suddenly I could feel her pain in the eyes of Ukrainian mothers\, grandparents and children fleeing their homes. \nI am donating proceeds of “When the Birds Stop Singing” to Ukrainian nonprofit Prostir Radity\, who provide an innovative healing program for children in Ukraine impacted by the war. \nTo contribute and help children in Ukraine\, download the song on Bandcamp where you can give as much as you’d like: https://valerieghent.bandcamp.com/track/when-the-birds-stopped-singing Please give generously! \n \nMy heartfelt gratitude to Bashiri Johnson (percussion)\, Bar Scott (backing vocals)\, Dave Eggar (cellos)\, Phil Faconti (guitar)\, Jérôme Buigues (mix)\, Greg Calbi (mastering)\, and Alyona Chukanova. This music wouldn’t exist without you. \nSong links:\nGlowing review in XSNoize “Music with meaning” – https://www.xsnoize.com/valerie-ghent-shows-support-for-the-people-of-ukraine-with-her-new-single-when-the-birds-stop-singing/\nBandCamp: https://valerieghent.bandcamp.com/track/when-the-birds-stopped-singing – contribute as much as you can to support children in Ukraine \nMore info on Valerie’s website: https://valghent.com/when-the-birds-stopped-singing/ \nValerie Ghent Artist Bio: \nRecording artist Valerie Ghent is a multi-talented singer\, songwriter\, musician\, producer and engineer from New York City. An outstanding live performer with an ethereal\, evocative voice\, Valerie weaves together blues\, soul and jazz into a breathtaking tapestry of “soul-stirring\, uplifting songs full of vitality and joy.” Longtime keyboardist/vocalist with music legends Ashford & Simpson\, Valerie has worked with music luminaries and icons Nina Simone\, Dr. Maya Angelou\, Roberta Flack\, Billy Preston and Debbie Harry (Blondie)\, among others. As solo artist Valerie has released five albums\, including Day to Day Dream\, which launched her #1 hit song\, Love Enough for a Lifetime. Her album Velours launched New York City Streets\, hailed by critics as a “New Anthem for NYC”. Valerie tours and records in France several times each year\, where her single Feelin’ Alright reached #1 on Jazz Radio France. Her newest release is the anti-war song\, When the Birds Stopped Singing. \nA native New Yorker\, Valerie grew up in SoHo and Greenwich Village. Born into a musical family\, Valerie began writing songs as a child\, recording in her father’s electronic music studio\, absorbing her mother’s string quartet rehearsals and falling asleep to the music of Ornette Coleman\, who lived and rehearsed in the same building. valerieghent.com \n“Ghent\, herself\, is a vocal phenomenon…she has the professionalism and rippling\, effervescent energy of a top pop/rock star.” – NY Cabaret Today \n“Valerie Ghent\, la Dame de New York – Il est rare de trouver une voix aussi singulière et une maîtrise du rythme aussi pertinente.”- La Marseillaise

SUMMARY:Marya Zimmet On the Road to Love Review
DESCRIPTION:Marya Zimmet’s Debut Album ON THE ROAD TO LOVE Is Such Sweet Surprise\nIt starts slow\, like the sunrise. It eases its way into the consciousness\, like the dawning awareness that something delicious has entered the sense of smell\, that something beautiful has slipped into view\, that something surprisingly gorgeous has permeated the ears. Eventually\, the experience is in full bloom and you realize you are smiling\, and you are feeling good\, without really knowing why. Marya Zimmet’s album ON THE ROAD TO LOVE has taken hold. \nMs. Zimmet’s 2021 album is her first and the cd listening public should be grateful that the jazz singer finally made it into the studio – furthermore\, those same people should be hopeful that there will be a second album on its way. In the liner notes on the album (yes\, there is a physical cd\, and the packaging is admirably artistic)\, Marya explains the story and reasoning behind the creation of On The Road To Love\, while showcasing the lovely photography of Sue Barr\, but as elegant and enjoyable as the packaging and writing are\, the meat of the project is the eleven sensational\, sophisticated\, and sentient performances that make up the record\, one that is destined for repeat listenings\, thanks to Zimmet’s unpretentious approach to storytelling and the presence on the project of Tedd Firth\, who Zimmet credits as director/arranger/orchestrator. \n…This is accessible and emotional musical storytelling with technical artistry woven throughout in a manner that neither intimidates nor distracts. The focus\, from the onset\, is clearly on providing Marya with a platform from which to tell these stories\, and times come in the imagination where one can actually visualize Zimmet on a stage\, performing the songs live\, such is the power of the yin and the yang that is technique and artistry\, as captured here.” \n– Broadway World\nStephen Mosher\nAugust 14\, 2022 \nRead the full review in Broadway World \nLearn more about Marya Zimmet’s On the Road to Love

SUMMARY:Valerie Hallier at Governor's island
DESCRIPTION:Magical Pew Supreme\nThis site specific installation stages a confessional set up inviting the visitor to genuflect\, reflect and if appropriate\, repent. The installation translates the feeling of disconnection between the “natural” world and our over-commercialized Western world. Inspired by my Catholic upbringing and by K. Malevitch’s Suprematism\, among various sources\, the form and aesthetic grew out of the constraints of the room. I built “towers-totems” out of trash picked up on the island as well as my own. I covered them up with plaster clothes\, like you would a broken leg\, to repair their status and hide their true nature as trash by recycling them as art. Building up from floor to ceiling\, the fragile constructions become totemic constructs partially covered by flower petals also collected on the island. \n“I am so thrilled to share this event with the 7 amazing artists who have been an inspiration and a motivation. We took over the house and split it into 8 separate\, yet interconnected\, universes. SUMMARY:Sonia Gechtoff : Exhibition Review by Hyperallergic
DESCRIPTION:Sonia Getchtoff\, “Hiroshige Revisited” (1988)\, acrylic and graphite on canvas\, 58 1/4 x 40 1/2 inches (photo by Guang Xu\, image courtesy the artist and 55 Walker\, New York) \nSonia Gechtoff\n55 Walker\n(55 Walker Street\, Tribeca\, Manhattan)\nthrough August 26\, 2022 \nHYPERALLERGIC Review excerpt\nJohn Yau\nJuly 27\, 2022 \nGechtoff’s work did not fit into any of the New York art world’s narratives of progressive art. It is time we look closer at what this marvelous artist achieved. \nConsisting of 21 paintings and works on paper made between 1958 and 2017\, a span of nearly half a century\, the exhibition marks an important step in the art world’s consideration of Gechtoff. From relying on a palette knife to using acrylic and graphite in the same painting\, as well as incorporating diverse sources within a collage-like single painting (architecture\, landscape\, and flames and wave-like forms)\, Gechtoff confidently pushed her art into new realms\, inspired by collages she made in 1962 and ’63\, none of which are in the exhibition. At the same time\, working in New York under the sign of pure painting and later the “death of painting\,” it is easy to understand why she was marginalized. Her work did not fit into any of the New York art world’s narratives of progressive art. The fact that drawing was a serious part of her practice and that she did not work on a monumental scale probably did not help her either. Nor did it help that she and her husband had two children. \nOf the 21 works in the exhibition\, 19 were made between 1984 and 2017\, the year before she died. Eight of these works\, done in acrylic and graphite on paper\, are no bigger than 16 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches. Made when the art world was enthralled with Neo-expressionism\, these and other late works make it clear that Gechtoff had no down periods. From the 1980s on\, she combined figural allusions to landscape and architecture with abstract passages that evoke convulsive change\, such as crashing waves and roiling skies. She seems preoccupied with time passing in both the daily sense and the larger\, cosmic sense. \nRead the full review at Sonia Gechtoff \nPainting credit on home page: Sonia Gechtoff\, “Celestial Red” (1994)\, acrylic on canvas\, 77 3/4 x 78 inches (photo by Guang Xu\, image courtesy the artist and 55 Walker\, New York) \nThe exhibition was organized by Bortolami Gallery\, kaufmann repetto\, Andrew Kreps Gallery\, and David Richard Gallery.

SUMMARY:Penny Jones & Company: Boxes to Buildings Workshop
DESCRIPTION:DUE TO UNAVAILABILITY OF COMMUNITY ROOM\, WORKSHOP CANCELLED\nBoxes to Buildings Workshop\nTuesdays June 14 – 28\, 2022\n3:30PM – 5:30PM \nWestbeth Community Room\n155 Bank St\nNew York\, NY enter through courtyard \nRegistration required. \nPROOF OF VACCINATION REQUIRED AT DOOR BEFORE ENTRY\n. \nPenny Jones is the founder of Penny Jones & Company Puppets: Early Childhood Theater\, a legendary puppet show that has been in performance for over 40 years. Her hand-made puppets were recently featured in Puppets of New York City exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York. \nPenny Jones excerpt from Profiles in Art Interview:\nWhen I was working with other people’s puppet shows\, they were geared to older audiences\, but younger children came. And somebody made the rather mean joke that you could tell the success of the show by counting the puddles left by the youngest children in the front row\, due to overexcitement. I thought\, That’s terrible! I realized nobody is writing for that age\, respecting that age. So I determined when I went out myself that I would focus on that age. I had a child that age. I really identified with it. I wanted to produce shows which would capture their imagination\, which wouldn’t scare them\, which would move them\, which would not treat them like second-class citizens. And so I thought about it. I thought they have more fun when they’re sitting together as a group than when they’re sitting in chairs that are too big for them in between adults. They like to laugh. They need to exercise during the show. It’s too long for them to sit through a whole show. So we invent games that will exercise them without having to get up and run around. That’s why every show has a hand game. And they naturally want to participate. They say hello to the puppet when they see it. They don’t understand that you’re supposed to be a listener\, a watcher\, and not participate. \nAs I developed the different shows\, I kept thinking of various ways that would allow them to participate. \nRead entire interview with Terry Stoller Penny Jones\npuppeteer \nPenny Jones Westbeth Icon – See the film made about her as part of the Westbeth Icon Series\nVisit: Penny Jones Westbeth Icon \nMore Information about Penny Jones & Company Puppets\nVisit: Penny Jones & Company
