SUMMARY:Jenny Tango and Juanita McNeely in Group Show
DESCRIPTION:The Difference We’ve Made\nNew Work by Trailblazing Women Artists of the 70’s \nSHOW DATES: “October 13-November 9\, 2022 \nDATE: Thursday\, October 13\, 2022/ Opening Reception\nTIME: 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.\nPLACE: Carter Burden Gallery\n548 West 28th Street\, #534\nNew York\, NY 10001 \nMasks are mandatory. \nCarter Burden Gallery presents The Difference We’ve Made\,\ncurated by Cynthia Mailman\, Vernita Nemec\, and Susan Grabel. It is\naccompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue\, with essays by Ellen Lubell and Andrew\nHottle. \nEvents\ninclude A Night of Performances with Vernita Nemec\, Kazuko Miyamoto\, and Toki\nOzaki\, as well as Linda Montano on Thursday\, October 20 at 7pm\, and Meet the Artists on\nSaturday\, November 5 at 2pm. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday\, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.\, Saturday\n11 a.m. – 6 p.m. \nArtists\nThe Difference We’ve Made highlights the work of Dotty Attie\, Nancy Azara\, Josely\nCarvalho\, Maureen Connor\, Betsy Damon\, Carol Goebel\, Janet Goldner\, Susan Grabel\, Carol\nHamoy\, Janet Olivia Henry\, Lucy Hodgson\, Joyce Kozloff\, Cynthia Mailman\, Carol Massa\,\nDindga McCannon\, Juanita McNeely\, Kazuko Miyamoto\, Vernita Nemec\, Senga Nengudi\,\nSusan Schwalb\, Dee Shapiro\, Jenny Tango\, and Sharon Wybrants. Their work represents the\ndiversity of creative expression with mediums ranging from installation\, painting\,\nsculpture\, performance\, and more. Through their compelling works these talented\,\nfeminist\, trailblazing artists cleared paths for generations of women. This exhibition\nillustrates their perseverance in their ongoing creative practice to this day. Marlena\nVaccaro\, Director and Curator of Carter Burden Gallery\, states\, “The Carter Burden Gallery\nopened in Chelsea in 2009 to meet a need of representation of older professional artists. It\nis the first of its kind in the nation\, exclusively featuring the vibrant and significant works\nof professional artists over the age of sixty. The women exhibited in this show are the\nshoulders subsequent women artists have stood and continue to stand on.\nIt is no secret that older professional artists are often under-recognized by the arts sector\nand given few opportunities to show and sell their work due to perceived limited\nmarketability and other ageism related factors. This can be especially true of women\nartists. This dually hinders economic opportunity for older artists\, while limiting public\naccess to unique artistic perspectives. \nThe Carter Burden Gallery celebrates this community’s unique contribution and particularly the immense and enduring influence of\nthe pioneering artists in this show. As Maya Angelou said\, ‘I’ve learned that people will\nforget what you said\, people will forget what you did\, but people will never forget how you\nmade them feel.’ The outstanding artists in this show made future generations of women\nartists feel they could do it\, feel they could be part of the important work being done\, and\nknow they would be leaders in the conversations that would shape the art world.”\nAbout the Carter Burden Gallery \nLocated in Chelsea\, the Carter Burden Gallery is a program of The Carter Burden Network\ndesigned to give a voice to New York City’s re-emerging older professional artists. The\nCarter Burden Network is a non-profit organization established in 1971 by the late Carter\nBurden\, a New York City Councilman. Please visit www.carterburdennetwork.org. SUMMARY:PRINT PAINT: The interaction of printmaking and painting by 12 Westbeth artists
DESCRIPTION:October 8 – November 12\, 2022\nOpening Reception Saturday Oct 8. 5pm – 8pm \nWalking Tour Artist Talk October 22\, 2022 3pm – 5pm\nPRINT/PAINT is an exhibition of twelve multidisciplinary and long-term Westbeth residents initially intended to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Westbeth Graphics Studio in 2020. After a two-year postponement due to the COVID pandemic\, the show opens with a new concept in Westbeth Gallery\, honoring the Graphics Studio and highlighting possibilities of printmaking by placing it in direct conversation with painting. \nBeyond these twelve artists\, within Westbeth\, there is an array of communities and sub-communities dedicated to a continued and specific practice. PRINT/PAINT is ultimately a celebration of the versatility of artists’ practices that thrive in the creative oasis where lifelong experimentation is encouraged and expected. Residency in Westbeth has offered these artists a platform to share their expressions in print and painting form with freedom and support. PRINT/PAINT is an example of what can be when access\, funding\, and support collide with an unfettered creative process. \n– from Introductory Essay by Izzy Nova \nParticipating Artists\nJuanita McNeely (b.1936\, St. Louis\, MO) moved to New York in 1967 and became entrenched in the city’s artistic community and feminist collectives. Her depiction of the human figure displays extreme physicality—pairing angst and pain in close tandem with a sheer pleasure of existence in body and mind. SUMMARY:Lorraine O'Grady Has Always Been a Rebel The New Yorker Interview
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: newyorker.com 2022 \nLorraine O’Grady Has Always Been A Rebel \nInterviewed by Doreen St Félix\nSeptember 29\, 2022 \nI wanted to ask you about your relationship to fame and attention\, especially the fame and attention that have attended your work in the past decade or so. When we think of Lorraine O’Grady\, we think of the gate-crasher. With “Greetings and Theses\,” the persona of the Knight—your second since “Mlle Bourgeoise Noire”—was anticipated\, so much so that the announcement of the upcoming performance was taken as the work itself. \nThere’s two different questions there. The first is the reaction to the reception of the earlier body of work. And that was very calculated\, of course\, because\, from the minute I got invited to be in this groundbreaking show that Connie Butler curated\, called “WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution\,” I realized that it was going to be more important than maybe even she thought. I woke up and I said\, “Nobody knows who I am.” Connie knew who I was because she had been one of the young women at this organization\, wac\, the Women’s Action Coalition\, which I had been very active in during the early days and which she had named her show after. She always knew she was going to put me in the most important position of the show\, which was the opening act. You couldn’t get into the show without passing me. I didn’t want to be a one-hit wonder. I wanted to make it possible for people who had been impressed by what they saw\, or mystified by what they saw\, or whatever they were\, to find out more about me. I made sure that I had a Web site that was pretty extensive of all of the work that I had done up to that point. \nYour Web site is a living archive. One of the best artist Web sites. \nIt’s pretty extraordinary\, but that’s only because I grew up with the Internet\, believe it or not. I’m eighty-eight\, but I was one of the early adopters\, because I happened to just luck out and have a fellowship at the Bunting Institute\, at Harvard\, the year the Internet began. My first browser was Netspace One. That was 1994 and I’ve been digitized ever since. \nRead the entire interview HERE

SUMMARY:Juanita McNeely artist in PRINT PAINT show makes debut at Whitney Museum
DESCRIPTION:Juanita McNeely “Is It Real? Yes It Is” 1969 \n“For 90 years of its existence\, the Whitney Museum of American Art did not own a single painting that explicitly deals with abortion. But that has changed. The museum recently purchased Juanita McNeely’s “Is it Real? Yes It Is!” (1969)\, a mural-sized painting that recounts\, in a fragmented narrative spanning nine separate panels\, her harrowing experience of having an abortion in the early ’60s\, when the procedure was illegal. The painting will make its museum debut on Sept. 20\, when the Whitney rehangs its permanent collection. \nIn recent years\, a fashion for painting the human figure has preoccupied the art world\, with an emphasis on race\, gender and other urgent social issues. Yet another pressing topic in America has been curiously absent from art: abortion\, which became all the more timely when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June. \nDepictions of abortion are still rare in the art-history canon. Check the walls of museums and flip through the pages of H.W. Janson or other art textbooks\, and you are likely to encounter countless images of beatific mothers\, dimpled infants and a world in which pregnancies are not terminated. \nBut the subject of abortion\, which historically was shrouded in shame and relegated to the realm of unspeakable secrets\, has lately been gaining visibility in the art world.” \n– Deborah Solomon\nNY Times\nSeptember 10\, 2022 \nRead the complete article: After Decades of Silence\, Art about Abortion (Cautiously) enters the Establishment \nJuanita Mc Neeley’s work can also be seen at the Westbeth Gallery in the Print Paint Show opening October 9\, 2022. Compré mi primera cámara y comencé a fotografiar cosas a mi alrededor.Aprendo mi oficio\, realmente tienes que entender todos los diferentes aspectos que intervienen en la industria de la fotografía. No se trata solo del proceso técnico y “capturar el momento”\, también debe comprender el lado comercial. SUMMARY:DAVID GREENSPAN. FOUR SAINTS IN THREE ACTS
DESCRIPTION:“I will be performing my solo rendition of Gertrude Stein’s Four Saints in Three Acts September 15 – October 9. The play is being produced by the Lucille Lortel Foundation – and hosted by Target Margin Theater at their Doxie space in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn. See below for tickets – as low as $15. \nThis production is the result of a 4-year collaboration with director Ken Rus Schmoll – and the culmination of an 11-year project I began with my solo rendition of Barry Conner’s The Patsy\, followed by my solo rendition of Eugene O’Neill’s Strange Interlude. Four Saints completes this trilogy: three radically different plays – all written in the late 1920’s. \nI’ll tell you up front: the play features no discernible story – and there is little indication of characterization. Stein eschewed story and action for what she called “emotion and time.” If that sounds highfalutin – trust me it’s not. It’s playful\, it’s tender\, it’s dramatic and poignant. \nThe play runs 90 minutes without a single trim. I sure hope you can attend. I think you’ll have a heck of a good time.” \n– David Greenspan \nPreviews: September 15 – 18\, 2022\nPerformances: September 19 – October 9\, 2022\nLocation\nThe Doxsee at Target Mrgin Theater\n232 52nd Street\nBrooklyn\, NY \nTickets:\nPay-what-you-can pricing of\n $15\, $25 or $35\, with open seating\nlortel.org/four-saints-in-three-acts

SUMMARY:John Jasperse World Premier Visitation
DESCRIPTION:Choreographed by John Jasperse\, Visitation was created in collaboration with performers Tim Bendernagel\, Cynthia Koppe\, and Doug LeCours with original music by composer-collaborator Hahn Rowe and recorded music by Richard Wagner and lighting design by Stan Pressner. Photography: Maria Baranova \n\nVISITATION\nChoreographed by John Jasperse \nSeptember 9 and 10\, 2022 at 7:30PM\nNYU Skirball presents John Jasperse Projects\, in the world premiere of Visitation\, a new dance that is part seance and part exorcism\, on Friday\, September 9 and Saturday\, September 10 at 7:30 pm. Choreographed by John Jasperse\, Visitation was created in collaboration with performers Tim Bendernagel\, Cynthia Koppe\, and Doug LeCours with original music by composer-collaborator Hahn Rowe and recorded music by Richard Wagner and lighting design by Stan Pressner. \nVisitation loosely draws on spiritualism\, mesmerism\, the occult\, hysteria\, and the exoticization of myth. The dance vacillates between pensive\, introspective sensing and lush\, at times even rhapsodic\, sequences of cascading movement that verge on camp. By channeling ghosts\, the dance moves from present day\, into the past\, and back again. Original music by Jasperse’s long-time collaborator Hahn Rowe is interspersed with orchestral fragments from various operas by Richard Wagner. \nChoreographed by John Jasperse\, Visitation was created in collaboration with performers Tim Bendernagel\, Cynthia Koppe\, and Doug LeCours with original music by composer-collaborator Hahn Rowe and recorded music by Richard Wagner and lighting design by Stan Pressner. Photography: Maria Baranova \nThe complex\, polarizing figure of Wagner and his music functions with Visitation as both occasional musical accompaniment and an historical object; as the dance sinks into the sweeping chromaticism of Wagner’s immersive sound\, we cannot help but recall how the power of his music\, and the emotions that it conjured\, were appropriated in support of pivotal historical actions\, at times heinously destructive and at other times emancipatory. As we emerge from this musical time-traveling into the present\, we are left to ponder how our own feelings carry us into action as we shape our collective future. \nJohn Jasperse has been working as a dance artist in New York City for 37 years. He has created nineteen evening-length works with John Jasperse Projects as well as numerous commissions for other companies including Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project\, Batsheva Dance Company\, and Lyon Opera Ballet. John Jasperse Projects has been presented in 26 U.S. cities and 29 countries. He is the recipient of a 2014 Doris Duke Artist Award and two Bessie awards (2014 and 2001)\, among many other accolades. Jasperse is co-founder of CPR—Center for Performance Research in Brooklyn\, New York and is Director of Dance at Sarah Lawrence College. \nThe creation of Visitation as well as its performances at NYU Skirball and other activities of John Jasperse Projects are supported\, in part\, by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Cultural Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, the New York State Council on the Arts\, the James E. SUMMARY:Christina Maile and Ann Hamilton in Framing the Village Group Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Opening Tuesday Sept 6\, 2022 from 6PM – 8PM\nReservations: www.framing.eventbrite.com \nSept 7 – Sept 30\, 2022\nRevelation Gallery\n218 West 11th Street\nNYC \nCurated by Mark Kehoe\, Framing the Village group exhibition at the Revelation Gallery at St John’s in the Village\, demonstrates that the arts continue to flourish across Greenwich Village and the East Village. The show features the work of more than 30 painters and photographers who either live in or have close ties with the area bounded by !4th and Houston Streets\, and the Hudson and East Rivers. Embracing oil painting\, watercolor\, analog and digital photography\, all the work in Framing the Village – the inaugural Village Trip art show – has been created by living artists who continue to be inspired by neighborhoods that have been a center of fine arts since the late 19th century. \nChristina Maile “Mom” \n“Mom” was taken on Hudson Street near Perry St. To me\, it resonates with the idea of Greenwich Village as a place where people escaped repression\, intolerance and misunderstanding – things often associated with their families. Symbolized by the disposal of the “old news” about themselves along with the mythic ties to “Mom”\, the photo is a proclamation of liberation. \nChristina Maile is a writer\, printmaker\, and a landscape architect. She has received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant\, a Joan Mitchell Studio Grant and was twice awarded a Miriam Chaikin Foundation Grant for Writing.\nchristinamaile.com\ninstagram @mailestudios \n \nAnn Hamilton is a mixed media artist and clothing designer. Her work combines mixed media with found objects\, incorporating watercolor\, hand knitting\, stitching\, and vintage fabric.\nannhamiltontextileart.com\ninstagram @ah-_textile_art \n“Framing the Village” is part of the Villge Trip Festival 2022\n \nMore Info at: https://www.thevillagetrip.com/program-2022/
