SUMMARY:Dickcissel: A Rare Bird Sighted at Westbeth
DESCRIPTION:Photo of Dickcissel by Chip Franke \nOn Dec 8\, 2023 The Linnaean Society of New York issued “A Rare Bird Alert” for the Dickcissel. “This bird has bounced around the West Village – the Bleecker Playground\, Abingdon Square Park as well as moving around the adjoining neighborhood.” \nDuring the weekend\, Westbeth was visited by dozens of birdwatchers who wandered into the Westbeth courtyard and stationed themselves on the corners of Bank St and Washington St hoping to nab a sighting. \nThe Westbeth courtyard garden \, a National Wildlife Foundation certified wildlife habitat garden\, is home to many House Wrens. According to Charles\, a birdwatcher who was interviewed by the website\, “Hanging with House Wrens is a perfect plan since the Dickcissel is very similar in build except it has yellow streaks along its head.” \nCharles the birdwatcher further explained why a Dickcissel in the area makes for a rare bird sighting. “Dickcissels\, as birds do\, migrate south this time of year. However the Dickcissel migratory pattern originates in the Midwest and heads towards Central America. Sighting them as far north as the Big Apple City is a rare experience for bird and watcher.” \nThe Linnaean Society of New York fosters an appreciation of the natural world with a special emphasis on birds. Founded in 1878\, the Society comprises dedicated amateurs and professionals interested in the study\, preservation\, and enjoyment of nature and the environment.

SUMMARY:Olive Ayhens Reconnections - In Kinship with Nature\, and Secrets in Place
DESCRIPTION:Lettuce Lake (detail) SECRETS IN PLACE at Tayloe Piggott Gallery Dec 14 – Feb 4\, 2024 \nWaves (detail) RECONNECTIONS – IN KINSHIP WITH NATURE United Nations Headquarters Nov 30 – Jan 15\, 2024 \n\nRECONNETIONS – IN KINSHIP WITH NATURE\nNov 30 – Jan 15\, 2024\nUnited Nations Headquarters\nUnited Nations Exhibition Space\n405 East 45th Street\nNew York\, NY \nVisitors have to check in at the Visitors Center at 1st Avenue and East 45th Street and pass through a security check before entering building. \nRe-Connections: In Kinship With Nature blends artistic expression with environmental activism. The artists address the urgent need to live more responsibly within the Earth’s finite resources. Witness to floods\, rising waters and other man-made threats\, they imagine a future where we live in harmony with nature and feel an obligation to work together to take action and reverse this trend. \nSECRETS IN PLACE\nDec 14 – Feb 4\, 2024\nTayloe Pigott Gallery\nJackson Hole\, Wyoming \nSecrets in Place\, Ayhens’s first exhibition at Tayloe Piggott Gallery\, presents a selection of oil paintings and ink and watercolor works from the mid-1990s to the present. For the past forty years\, Ayhens has focused much of her practice on the creation of environmental allegories\, each as whimsical as they are catastrophic\, which fuse antithetical and imaginary worlds into “jumbled panoramas\,” according to Hyperallergic’s Stephen Maine. Her inventive contemporary landscapes amalgamate nature and man-made environments\, creating implausible realms of juxtaposed skyscrapers perched on cliffsides… \nMore about Olive Ayhens HERE

SUMMARY:Joan Davidson First President of Westbeth Dies at 96. See Photos of Westbeth through the decades.
DESCRIPTION:Joan Davidson at the Tenth Anniversary of Westbeth 1980. Photo: Shelley Seccombe \nThroughout my tenure on the board – and most importantly in my role as chair – Joan was an enthusiastic\, sage and generous advisor and supporter. Always available to listen\, opine and contextualize this daring and unique experiment that is Westbeth. Her dedication to the mission evident until the very end of her most extraordinary life. We will carry on her legacy – using her tireless commitment as our guiding star.\n– Joe Versace\, President Westbeth Board of Directors \nWe at Westbeth are saddened to hear of the passing of Joan Kaplan Davidson\, a trailblazing preservationist and tireless advocate for the arts. As the president of the J.M. Kaplan Fund\, she played an essential role in the founding of Westbeth and served as our first president. We are grateful to Joan both for her leadership in the early days and for her continued support over the years. We will continue to honor her life’s work by lifting up the very artists she sought to protect.\n– Peter Madden\, Westbeth Executive Director \n…Ms. Davidson made her most lasting mark from 1977 to 1993 as president of the J.M. Kaplan Fund\, a foundation established by her father\, Jacob M. Kaplan\, in 1945. The fund has a modest endowment… but it has often been the first stop for those seeking grants to save buildings\, support cultural institutions or restore landmarks in New York. Under Mr. Kaplan\, the foundation provided the money to save Carnegie Hall in the 1960s when no one else seemed interested. It also created Westbeth\, the artists’ housing complex in Lower Manhattan that became the model for the rehabilitation of industrial buildings everywhere. Ms. Davidson managed the creation of Westbeth for her father and was its first president.\n– Excerpt – NY Times Obituary Aug 11\, 2023 by Enid Nemy. Photo on Home Page: Alan E.Solomon.
