Over the years and under her guidance it has evolved into a literary group of women whose stories originate in personal experience and the challenges of that experience. Recently the group began giving annual presentations of their work\, of which this is the 5th or 6th. \nKaren Ludwig’s numerous Broadway credits include Neil Simon’s BROADWAY BOUND\, and THE DEVILS with Anne Bancroft. She appeared in many Off-Broadway performances at The Public Theater and was a member of Andre Gregory’s Manhattan Project. Originally from Caracas\, Venezuela\, Ismael began his music studies at age 5. After a bitter-sweet breakup with the piano\, his interest for percussion sparked while at the Prudencio Esaa music school. Soon enough he began receiving private drum lessons from different teachers who including exceptional classical percussionists Jose Mato\, with whom he studied for 8 years. He began performing professionally at age 14. A short time later he toured his native Venezuela and\, had the opportunity of touring internationally. \nWhen Ismael came to New York he joined The Collective School of Music as a full-time student for 2 years. Following that\, he attended the CCNY Jazz Performance Program. Studying with Ian Froman\, Peter Retzlaff\, Bob Quaranta\, Kim Plainfield\, Vince Cherico\, Marko Djordjevic\, Chris Coleman\, Tim Ries\, Dan Carillo\, Vanderlei Pereira\, and Mike Hollober amongst others helped him refine and develop his sound and vision in music. \nIsmael currently performs nationally and internationally with Blondy\, Yordano\, Monte\, Amine Hachem\, Ali Bello\, The Latino Experimental Project\, just to name a few. She published an artist’s book\, Women of Chelm\, started a women’s comic book collective\, Bloody Wymmin\, and authored a pictorial history: The Jewish Community of Staten Island. She collaborated with sculptor Susan Grabel on Project Venus\, presenting unabashed images of the aging woman’s body\, from 1999-2001. Her work has been shown in New York City\, Beijing\, Shanghai\, Italy and recently in The Difference We’ve Made: New Work by Women Artists of the 70s at Carter Burden Gallery. \nKen Wade moved into WestBeth Artist Housing on January 1\, 1970 where the artist has lived and worked for 53 years. In Sept 2023 Wade had a solo Selective Retrospective with drawings\, paintings\, and sculptures dating from 1964 to the present qt Westbeth Gallery..\nHe began making art in the early 1960s while living on the Island state of Tasmania; 125 miles off the SE coast of Australia. His first American exhibition (1968) was at the Corcoran Museum\, Washington DC.”Ken Wade has been singing songs and telling stories for many years. I find humor in my struggles with social anxiety\, and changes in my body\, all my attempts to be [comfortable in my own skin]. While the imagery is often grotesque\, the flayed and molting creatures symbolize positive change\, growth\, and transformation.” \nNell Breyer: Nell Breyer is an artist working at the intersection of media\, movement and the public domain. She uses mark-making and the moving body to explore how we perceive and understand human movement’s delineation of shared space and calibration of place. \nSandra Cavanagh: Interested in the pairing of form and message\, and formal variations on a theme\, I sustain a figurative focus in reaction to current and historical narratives including my own. Recent global events have led me to considerations of mortality and loss of innocence in cross generational stories\, the usefulness of art’s centuries old regard of myth\, foundational stereotypes and the mundane occurrence of violence. \nMarie Chloé Duval: My interest in painting is based on a desire to translate my analysis and interpretation of society\, building on my academic background studying social issues. By deliberately obstructing some elements and removing others\, I leave space for interpretation\, suggesting the confusion of the perceptual state we live in\, inviting the observers to question their role in the world. Rina Dweck: Rina AC Dweck makes work riddled with juxtapositions. Organic next to synthetic\, readymade alongside handmade\, real vs. fake\, past beside present. Her use of hair as a material signifier tethers her to explorations on identity\, femininity\, religion\, and freedom. Born and bred in New York City\, and raised in an immigrant community\, Dweck grew up surrounded by lively histories and intense contrast. This upbringing embedded a propensity toward reimagining\, and the belief in the beauty of difference as a source of possibility. \nPauline Galiana: My work blends noble and mundane\, materials\, deconstructing and reconstructing them into hybrid forms. I waste nothing. My processes are both obsessive and meditative\, combining meticulous planning and patient execution. My formal compositions\, often featuring rigorous grids\, reflect instinctive states of mind and reveal meaning through unexpected encounters and the beauty of entropy. \nAllan Gorman: ”I’m drawn to the built environment—the spaces we construct\, the boundaries we navigate\, and the edges where materials and light converge. There’s a mystery and escapism in my world that both obstructs and reflects nature\, and in my art I attempt to capture the audacity and ambition of these spaces. I’m fascinated by traces of human evidence left behind in hallways\, stairwells\, and empty offices.” \nHonglei Li: “As Chinese immigrant artists\, we strive to create artwork that can make a strong voice for the Asian immigrant community. Rader: As a third culture individual\, discovering the language of painting has been a vital component in her artistic development. Miller \n“As cultural institutions face an existential crisis over who funds them and how\, the 88-year-old artist Hans Haacke is still making curators and collectors clutch their pearls. \n…Before Haacke\, museums were considered\, in the words of the New York Times critic Holland Cotter\, “genteel and politically marginal.” Robber barons might have donated to them to enhance their social clout\, but such cultural largess was seldom questioned. Today\, though\, when phrases like “artwashing” and “toxic philanthropy” have entered the lexicon to describe the role that museums and other cultural organizations play in boosting the images of corporations and billionaires\, Haacke’s work is more than just relevant — it’s prophetic. With persistent clarity\, he seemed to understand\, half a century before anyone else\, the stakes of the uncomfortable relationship between art and politics. \nHaacke had been preparing for a major exhibition in Frankfurt that will open at the Schirn Kunsthalle in November and travel to the Belvedere Museum in Vienna. He also currently has work on view in New York\, in a group show dedicated to the American flag at Paula Cooper Gallery. The Frankfurt show\, a career retrospective\, includes many artworks about his native Germany\, among them another influential\, often suppressed piece\, 1981’s “Der Pralinenmeister\,” about Peter Ludwig\, a chocolate manufacturer and one of Germany’s most famous art collectors. Across 14 framed panels that include photographs of Ludwig and his factory workers\, Haacke wrote a text detailing the overlap between patronage and commerce: Ludwig received tax advantages from donating artworks and displaying his collection publicly and would loan artworks to cities where he produced or distributed his chocolate. “Der Pralinenmeister” also notes that Ludwig’s factories housed female foreign workers in on-site hostels that didn’t offer day care\, so women who gave birth were forced to leave or find foster homes for their children — or give them up for adoption. According to Haacke’s text\, the company’s personnel department stated that it was “a chocolate factory and not a kindergarten.” Ludwig\, who died in 1996\, was reportedly interested in buying the work\, perhaps to remove it from circulation\, but Haacke wouldn’t sell it to him.” \n– excerpts from the article by M.H. The third one\, based on the theme of aging and entitled ABOVE GROUND (Not Exactly a Comedy)\, we performed in the Community Room of Westbeth\, where it was met with great enthusiasm by the audience. \nTo explore intergenerational dynamics\, and to create a new piece\, we are opening the group up to ages 40-60 years\, along with some new seniors as well. \n\n\nNANCY GABOR and PAUL BINNERTS\, directors/acting teachers of YOU’RE NEVER\nTOO OLD TO PLAY\, are inviting interested people to join the group for a project based on a theme yet to be defined. His many compositions remain a part of the jazz repertoire today. \nHis remarkable rise from poverty led to conservatory studies and tours of Europe and Africa before he established himself as a fixture on the New York scene. His efforts as a music publisher were bold and groundbreaking\, and his quiet\, unassuming personality set him apart from most of his peers. In only a decade as a professional musician\, he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and served as a mentor to numerous aspiring young players. Gryce’s sudden disappearance at the start of the 1960s left the jazz world wondering as to his fate. Few were aware of his change of identity and professional rebirth. \nJazz Historian Noal Cohen co-authored the only known biography of Gigi Gryce. Misinformation about Gryce abounds\, and rumors have circulated for decades. Years of research and dozens of interviews were conducted for this book\, resulting in a biography that finally tells the true story of this often overlooked figure and illuminates his contributions to one of the richest periods in jazz history. \nAlexis Cole has been compared to classic jazz singers such as Sarah Vaughan and Anita O’Day. A Top Winner of the Jazzmobile Vocal Competition judged by jazz icons TS Monk\, Catherine Russell\, Grady Tate and Dr. Billy Taylor\, 3rd prize winner in the Montreux Jazz Vocal Competition\, and a finalist in the Sarah Vaughan Competition\, Alexis has a dozen albums to her credit on Motéma\, Chesky\, Venus Records and Zoho. I formed a small group to perform this music as Jazz. These songs were written for a vocalist with piano accompaniment. Alto Sax and Trumpet share the vocal melody\, Bass plays the bass line of the piano part. Pianist plays the piano part. Drums intuitively add Jazz rhythm. Generally no material is added\, none is left out.” \nAlban Maria Johannes Berg was an Austrian composer of the Second Viennese School. His compositional style combined Romantic lyricism with the twelve-tone technique. Although he left a relatively small oeuvre\, he is remembered as one of the most important composers of the 20th century for his expressive style encompassing “entire worlds of emotion and structure”. \nBios\nJohn Eckert is one of the busiest freelance trumpet players on the East Coast. He can play it all: jazz\, latin\, pop\, classical\, even opera. John juggles his engagements\, often working one or two recording or rehearsal sessions during a day followed by a bebop big-band gig or an evening at the Carlyle with Bobby Short later that same night.\nJohn has played on concert stages worldwide as well as in orchestra pits of operas and Broadway shows. He is equally comfortable in the lead trumpet chair of a big band or small jazz ensemble\, and enjoys playing all types of music with all kinds of musicians. “The variety just presents itself\,” says John\, explaining how he can play Benny Goodman or Stan Kenton arrangements one day\, then work with the Simon & Garfunkle Reunion Band\, the Smithsonian Jazz Orchestra\, Deodato’s 2001 Orchestra\, or the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra the next. John Eckert \nChris Hemingway\, born in Florence\, SC\, Chris grew up listening to the sounds of gospel\, soul\, R&B\, and blues even though he and his friends weren’t quite accepting of this “old people’s” music. However\, as a product of his own environment Chris eventually came full circle and would later pull from these early listening experiences to develop his overall approach to music today. Chris’ natural fluency in both classical and jazz styles separates him from most musicians.\nIn 2007 Mr. Hemingway won an Emmy Award as a performer of WQED’s (PBS affiliate station) “Live From Studio A.” As a sophomore at Duquesne University\, Chris won the School of Music’s prestigious concerto competition. At the young age of 21\, he was also a featured soloist with the Pittsburgh Symphony. Chris has studied with James Houlik at the North Carolina School of the Arts and at Duquesne University.@chrisheminwaysax \nA native of Long Beach \, California\, Cecilia Coleman started on piano at age five and began jazz piano studies at age fifteen. During the early 1980’s\, she studied with vibraphonist Charlie Shoemake\, arranger Tom Kubis and classical pianist Dr. Allan Giles.\nCecilia has led her own groups since 1990\, when she formed a trio with bassist Eric Von Essen and Kendall Kay on drums. In 1993\, she began working with her quintet. They recorded three CD’s:Words of Wisdom\,Young and Foolish and Home between 1990-1995 . Along with numerous local club and concert appearances\, the quintet also performed at the Monterey and Telluride Jazz Festivals. In 1998\, Coleman moved to New York and has played with a variety of groups as a sideman\, accompanist and leader.\nIn 2010\, Cecilia became a big band leader of some significance and has recorded two CD’s with the Cecilia Coleman Big Band. The 18 piece band continues to play concerts regularly in the NYC area and has been listed in the the Down Beat Critic’s poll as a rising star in the big band category. Cecilia Coleman \nWill Woodard’s big sound\, strong feel and creative approach have made him a welcome presence on stages and bandstands and in recording studios around the world. He’s been blessed with numerous opportunities to work with\, and learn from\, revered masters (Dave Liebman\, Ed Blackwell\, Billy Hart\, Chico Hamilton)\, cherished contemporaries (Walt Weiskopf\, Vince Herring\, Roy Hargrove)\, and great younger players (Chris Potter\, Jon Irabagon). Will just wrapped up the second of two long stints as a member of drummer Rick Hollander’s quartet\, with which he recorded five cds for the Concord\, Timeless and Laika record labels\, two of which featured his compositions\, and with which he toured extensively\, performing in major clubs\, concert halls and festival stages throughout the US\, Europe and Japan. Will Woodward \nAndy Watson has been a fixture on the New York jazz scene for over two decades.
