SUMMARY:UP CLOSE FROM AFAR Group Exhibition. Plus newly published review
DESCRIPTION:THE FRONT ROW CENTER REVIEW\nHolli Harms Oct 2024\nExcerpt\n“The Visual Arts Chair/Gallery directors are artists themselves. Valérie Hallier is the current\nVisual Arts Chair/Gallery director and she has curated an art exhibit this Fall at Westbeth\nGallery that is awe-inspiring. Entitled “Up Close From Afar\,” it is masterful. It is eclectic\,\nlustrous\, thought provoking\, and an eye-catching exhibit of art in multiple constructs. Sculptures\nusing fabric and taxidermy\, paintings with elaborate colors and textures and saturated strokes of\nblack and white hanging by what can only be described as a spider’s web.” \nRead the entire review HERE \nClick to enlarge \nSeptember 27 – October 20\, 2024\nCurated by Valérie Hallier \nFeaturing artists:\nKhaila Batts\, Kelly Boehmer\, Nell Breyer\, Sandra\nCavanagh\, Marie-Chloé Duval\, Rina Dweck\,\nPauline Galiana\, Allan Gorman\, Honglei Li\nAlex W. Rader \nArtist Reception and Opening: Friday\, September 27\,\n2024\, 6pm-8pm \nWestbeth Gallery is pleased to present this group exhibition featuring selected artists from our 2024 open call and curated by Valérie Hallier\, Westbeth current Visual Arts Chair and Gallery Director. \nThe group show explores eclectic artistic perspectives on our contemporary moment in the West. \nThrough an array of mediums\, including drawing\, painting\, sculpture and installation\, artists from Asia\, Europe and from within the United States\, offer detailed views\, up close and afar\, from their multicultural perspectives on contemporary existentialism. \nKhaila Batts: ”In the realm of contemporary existentialism\, my work delves into the individual’s quest for meaning and authenticity\, navigating the complexities of existence and identity within the modern context.” \nKelly Boehmer: “I sew soft sculptures that portray a tragic sense of humor\, celebrating the hidden beauty I find in anxieties. I find humor in my struggles with social anxiety\, and changes in my body\, all my attempts to be [comfortable in my own skin]. While the imagery is often grotesque\, the flayed and molting creatures symbolize positive change\, growth\, and transformation.” \nNell Breyer: Nell Breyer is an artist working at the intersection of media\, movement and the public domain. She uses mark-making and the moving body to explore how we perceive and understand human movement’s delineation of shared space and calibration of place. \nSandra Cavanagh: Interested in the pairing of form and message\, and formal variations on a theme\, I sustain a figurative focus in reaction to current and historical narratives including my own. Recent global events have led me to considerations of mortality and loss of innocence in cross generational stories\, the usefulness of art’s centuries old regard of myth\, foundational stereotypes and the mundane occurrence of violence. \nMarie Chloé Duval: My interest in painting is based on a desire to translate my analysis and interpretation of society\, building on my academic background studying social issues. By deliberately obstructing some elements and removing others\, I leave space for interpretation\, suggesting the confusion of the perceptual state we live in\, inviting the observers to question their role in the world. Rina Dweck: Rina AC Dweck makes work riddled with juxtapositions. Organic next to synthetic\, readymade alongside handmade\, real vs. fake\, past beside present. Her use of hair as a material signifier tethers her to explorations on identity\, femininity\, religion\, and freedom. Born and bred in New York City\, and raised in an immigrant community\, Dweck grew up surrounded by lively histories and intense contrast. This upbringing embedded a propensity toward reimagining\, and the belief in the beauty of difference as a source of possibility. \nPauline Galiana: My work blends noble and mundane\, materials\, deconstructing and reconstructing them into hybrid forms. I waste nothing. My processes are both obsessive and meditative\, combining meticulous planning and patient execution. My formal compositions\, often featuring rigorous grids\, reflect instinctive states of mind and reveal meaning through unexpected encounters and the beauty of entropy. \nAllan Gorman: ”I’m drawn to the built environment—the spaces we construct\, the boundaries we navigate\, and the edges where materials and light converge. There’s a mystery and escapism in my world that both obstructs and reflects nature\, and in my art I attempt to capture the audacity and ambition of these spaces. I’m fascinated by traces of human evidence left behind in hallways\, stairwells\, and empty offices.” \nHonglei Li: “As Chinese immigrant artists\, we strive to create artwork that can make a strong voice for the Asian immigrant community. Our experience as immigrants who struggled at the bottom of American society has informed and shaped our art\, which focuses on human suffering and injustice in societies. “ \nAlex W. Rader: As a third culture individual\, discovering the language of painting has been a vital component in her artistic development. Today\, she uses painting as a means of expressing the ineffable anxieties around womanhood. The role of representational painting proves to be an effective tool to evoke care\, devotion\, and time. With this\, the theme of home has entered her work\, providing new combinations of objects in uneasy domestic interiors. \nContact: Valérie Hallier (718) 414 9889 – westbethgallery@gmail.com – vhallier@gmail.com \nGallery hours: Wednesday through Sunday\, 1pm–6pm and by appointment \nClosing Events/ Artists talks: Saturday October 19 & Sunday October 20th during Westbeth Open House events. \nWestbeth Gallery\, 55 Bethune Street\, New York\, NY 10014 www.westbeth.org \nOPENING NIGHT Sept 27\, 2024\nClick image to start slideshow.

SUMMARY:Hans Haacke : Why are Museums So Afraid of this Artist?
DESCRIPTION:The artist Hans Haacke\, photographed in Abingdon Square in Manhattan’s West Village on June 26\, 2024. Haacke has rejected what he sees as the art world’s cult of personality and so doesn’t show his face in photographs. Photo Credit: Daniel Terna (Clicke to enlarge image) \nSept 16\, 2024\nNew York Times Style Magazine\nArts and Letters\nby M.H. Miller \n“As cultural institutions face an existential crisis over who funds them and how\, the 88-year-old artist Hans Haacke is still making curators and collectors clutch their pearls. \n…Before Haacke\, museums were considered\, in the words of the New York Times critic Holland Cotter\, “genteel and politically marginal.” Robber barons might have donated to them to enhance their social clout\, but such cultural largess was seldom questioned. Today\, though\, when phrases like “artwashing” and “toxic philanthropy” have entered the lexicon to describe the role that museums and other cultural organizations play in boosting the images of corporations and billionaires\, Haacke’s work is more than just relevant — it’s prophetic. With persistent clarity\, he seemed to understand\, half a century before anyone else\, the stakes of the uncomfortable relationship between art and politics. \nHaacke had been preparing for a major exhibition in Frankfurt that will open at the Schirn Kunsthalle in November and travel to the Belvedere Museum in Vienna. He also currently has work on view in New York\, in a group show dedicated to the American flag at Paula Cooper Gallery. The Frankfurt show\, a career retrospective\, includes many artworks about his native Germany\, among them another influential\, often suppressed piece\, 1981’s “Der Pralinenmeister\,” about Peter Ludwig\, a chocolate manufacturer and one of Germany’s most famous art collectors. Across 14 framed panels that include photographs of Ludwig and his factory workers\, Haacke wrote a text detailing the overlap between patronage and commerce: Ludwig received tax advantages from donating artworks and displaying his collection publicly and would loan artworks to cities where he produced or distributed his chocolate. “Der Pralinenmeister” also notes that Ludwig’s factories housed female foreign workers in on-site hostels that didn’t offer day care\, so women who gave birth were forced to leave or find foster homes for their children — or give them up for adoption. According to Haacke’s text\, the company’s personnel department stated that it was “a chocolate factory and not a kindergarten.” Ludwig\, who died in 1996\, was reportedly interested in buying the work\, perhaps to remove it from circulation\, but Haacke wouldn’t sell it to him.” \n– excerpts from the article by M.H. Miller\nRead the entire article in NY Times Style Magazine \nSee Also Westbeth Icon Evening with Hans Haacke

SUMMARY:You're Never Too Old to Play : Free Acting Workshop for Actors and Non Actors Ages 40+
DESCRIPTION:You’re Never Too Old to Play Current Cast ..Click to enlarge \nYOU'RE NEVER TOO OLD TO PLAY started as an acting workshop 5 years ago for seniors of 65 and older. It was open to actors and non-actors alike. We now wantto expand the group and invite new participants. \nIn the past five years we have made three pieces\, two of which we performed at\nthe Glade\, the small theatre on Little Island. The third one\, based on the theme of aging and entitled ABOVE GROUND (Not Exactly a Comedy)\, we performed in the Community Room of Westbeth\, where it was met with great enthusiasm by the audience. \nTo explore intergenerational dynamics\, and to create a new piece\, we are opening the group up to ages 40-60 years\, along with some new seniors as well. \n\n\nNANCY GABOR and PAUL BINNERTS\, directors/acting teachers of YOU’RE NEVER\nTOO OLD TO PLAY\, are inviting interested people to join the group for a project based on a theme yet to be defined. The theme will appeal to both participating generations. \nThe work will focus on physical and vocal exercises\, and improvisations\nemphasizing play and ensemble (Nancy's Core Technique)\, and crafting a story (Paul's Acting in Real Time). Central in this work is the presence of the actor.\nWe will conduct a workshop from October to Christmas\, for new members\, to get to know the group and to integrate into it. Commitment is necessary. After New Year 2025\, we plan to start on the new project. \nThe group meets once a week\, on Thursdays\, from 11 AM to 2 PM. \nfor more information and an interview please contact:gaborworks@gmail.com \nYou’re Never Too Old To Have Fun! SUMMARY:First Friday Music: Alexis Cole presents the Music of Gigi Gryce
DESCRIPTION:Click to enlarge \nFriday Aug 2\, 2024 at 7:00 pm \nWith Haneef Nelson – trumpet\nJohn DiMartino- piano \nFeaturing Jazz Historian and Gigi Gryce biographer Noal Cohen to discuss Gigi’s life and career. \nWestbeth Community Rm\n155 Bank St (enter through courtyard)\nNew York\, NY \nHear Gigi Gryce’s popular songs like Social Call and Music in the Air alongside many never before heard lyrics to his many lesser known gems! \nGigi Gryce was a saxophonist and composer who worked with some of the best-known names in jazz during the 1950s\, including Dizzy Gillespie\, Thelonious Monk\, and Max Roach. His many compositions remain a part of the jazz repertoire today. \nHis remarkable rise from poverty led to conservatory studies and tours of Europe and Africa before he established himself as a fixture on the New York scene. His efforts as a music publisher were bold and groundbreaking\, and his quiet\, unassuming personality set him apart from most of his peers. In only a decade as a professional musician\, he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and served as a mentor to numerous aspiring young players. Gryce’s sudden disappearance at the start of the 1960s left the jazz world wondering as to his fate. Few were aware of his change of identity and professional rebirth. \nJazz Historian Noal Cohen co-authored the only known biography of Gigi Gryce. Misinformation about Gryce abounds\, and rumors have circulated for decades. Years of research and dozens of interviews were conducted for this book\, resulting in a biography that finally tells the true story of this often overlooked figure and illuminates his contributions to one of the richest periods in jazz history. \nAlexis Cole has been compared to classic jazz singers such as Sarah Vaughan and Anita O’Day. SUMMARY:Westbeth receives $100\,000 grant from Frankenthaler Climate Initiative Phase 4
DESCRIPTION:Helen Frankenthaler\, Cool Summer\, 1962\, oil on canvas\, 69 3/4 x 120 inches (177.2 x 304.8 cm).© 2022 Helen Frankenthaler Foundation\, Inc. / Artists Rights Society (ARS)\, NY. Photo credit: Rob McKeever\, courtesy Gagosian \nOn July 31\, 2024 the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative Phase 4 announced that Westbeth will receive an implementation grant of $100\,000 for energy efficient window replacement. Implementation grants are designed to support projects already underway to address an institution’s climate impact or provide seed money for these projects that leads to matches for a larger capital project. \n As part of a multiphased project to replace all of Westbeth’s 663 deteriorated\, 100-plus-year-old windows\, FCI funding will support the replacement of the eight large original wood windows in the Westbeth Gallery with NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) approved\, custom fabricated\, historically accurate\, triple glazed\, energy efficient windows. The project will significantly reduce energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions in one of Westbeth’s most distinctive and publicly accessible areas. The project involves window fabrication\, site preparation\, installation\, finish work\, cleanup\, and lead testing\, ensuring a more consistent indoor temperature suitable for artwork. The gallery’s glass doors\, which date from the 1970s and do not close properly\, will also be replaced with a sliding door system\, providing further insulation. \nMore Info: FCI Westbeth \nHELEN FRANKENTHALER FOUNDATION AWARDS $3.3M TO 69 VISUAL ARTS ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS THE U.S. THROUGH FOURTH PHASE OF FRANKENTHALER CLIMATE INITIATIVE \nWith $14.1M Conferred to Date in Support of Climate Action\, Foundation Advances\nNew Standards of Energy Efficiency\, Sustainability\, and Resiliency in the Arts \nNew York\, NY—July 30\, 2024—The Helen Frankenthaler Foundation announced today that it has awarded $3.3M in grants to 69 arts organizations across the country through the fourth cycle of the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative (FCI). Dedicated to advancing climate action in the visual arts\, FCI supports a wide range of transformative energy-efficiency and environmental sustainability projects that help arts organizations assess\, develop\, and implement plans that reduce environmental impacts and operational costs and promote clean energy generation. The 2024 cohort of grantees also includes the first recipients of the Catalyst Grant\, which funds shortterm projects for organizations that are often at earlier stages of their climate action trajectory. \nThroughout the United States\, the 2024 recipients range in size\, scale and mission\, including noncollecting institutions such as Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) (MA)\, MoMA PS1 (NY)\, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (MO)\, and the New Museum (NY); nonprofits such as The Kitchen (NY)\, The Swiss Institute (NY)\, Storefront for Art and Architecture (NY)\, The Chinati Foundation (TX) and Westbeth (NY); art schools and university museums such as Rhode Island School of Design (RI)\, New Mexico Highlands University Foundation (NM)\, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (IL); museums such as Seattle Art Museum (WA)\, National Nordic Museum (WA)\, and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (PR); and community art centers such as Racing Magpie (SD); among many others. The full listing of 2024 grantees can be found below. \n“The Foundation is delighted with the advancements in environmental sustainability spearheaded by our partners through the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative\,” remarked Lise Motherwell\, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation. “With its newest round of grantees\, FCI has supported over two hundred visual arts organizations to date and is leading the way in tangible climate action.” \n“Over the last four years\, FCI grantees have developed and implemented groundbreaking climate focused initiatives\, inspiring a surge in applications and more ambitious projects\,” added Elizabeth Smith\, Executive Director of the Foundation. “Extending the Foundation’s full range of grantmaking activities\, FCI upholds Helen Frankenthaler’s legacy and cultivates a future where our peer organizations in the visual arts lead the way in creating a more sustainable world.” \nCreated and overseen by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation in partnership with RMI and Environment & Culture Partners\, FCI has expanded its impact and reach since its inception in 2021\, with broadened eligibility criteria and consecutive increases in its funding over the years\, from the initial $5M pledge to the current $15M commitment. Among the first grantmaking initiatives promoting energy efficiency and clean energy generation at art organizations\, FCI now includes projects at over 200 institutions across 37 states in the United States. \n“Thanks to the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative\, we’re already seeing significant and lasting changes within the industry. The level of knowledge demonstrated by this year’s awardees indicates a higher baseline of clean energy understanding and capabilities as compared to a few years ago\,” remarked Sarah Sutton\, CEO of Environment & Culture Partners. “Their projects not only reduce their own greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs\, they often incorporate components that also benefited their communities. Some are able to make ticket prices or artists’ costs more affordable\, others are expanding offerings without increasing emissions\, and some are planning for disaster resilience in ways that benefit their neighborhoods.” \n“The Frankenthaler Climate Initiative continues to enable an extraordinary shift in how arts organizations act on climate\,” said Jon Creyts\, CEO of RMI. “This year’s grantees are a testament to the ingenuity and commitment of many schools\, museums\, and other organizations that are embracing energy efficiency and clean energy technologies to reduce pollution\, lower energy costs\, and improve resilience. These projects are not just about installing super-efficient HVAC systems and solar microgrids; they are about showing what is possible when creativity and environmental responsibility intersect. RMI is proud to join the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation and Environment & Culture Partners in supporting this fourth cycle of FCI’s visionary leaders who prove that cultural organizations can be a powerful force for climate action and a model for others to follow.” \nThe Frankenthaler Climate Initiative reflects the Foundation’s mission to steward a vibrant arts and culture landscape\, with ongoing support for education\, scholarship\, and resiliency planning to ensure the future of the field. This year’s awardees are aligning their visual arts and education missions with a commitment to tangible climate action. Through FCI’s support\, these institutions are taking the following actions:\n● Embracing innovative new technologies and systems to increase energy efficiency\, including the North Carolina Glass Center\, which will use electric hot shops in its new education facility; the Flint Institute of Arts\, which will replace electric steam humidifiers with new ultrasonic humidification units to regulate artwork storage conditions; and the Seattle Art Museum\, which will modernize its Building Management System with automation and digitization capacities to maintain optimal energy efficiency.\n● Advancing net-zero and carbon-neutral plans\, including the California College of the Arts\, which will deploy solar energy through a new microgrid system at its expanded San Francisco campus\, aiming for net-zero operations; MacDowell\, where extensive artist studio renovations will advance its goal of being a carbon-neutral campus by 2045; and the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation\, which will install a new battery system and solar panels as part of its net-zero building renovation plan.\n● Upgrading and renovating historic buildings with energy-efficient systems that are being repurposed for the arts\, including the Center for Photography at Woodstock\, which is rehabilitating an old cigar factory with a design for an all-electric building; and KinoSaito\, which is installing solar panels and HVAC units for its art storage facility to maintain net-zero status while keeping temperature-safe conditions for artwork.\n● Conducting feasibility assessments and energy efficiency audits to identify opportunities for comprehensive improvement\, including the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art\, which is undertaking an analysis of how its 125-year-old building can reduce its carbon footprint and increase its on-site renewable energy production; and Bakehouse Art Complex\, which will conduct energy-use assessments for its 100-yearold historic building\, producing recommendations that will inform a multi-million dollar renovation plan.\nIn support of the Initiative’s commitment to aligning cultural sector practices with federally recognized energy standards\, FCI grant recipients track and report their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions using Energy Star® Portfolio Manager®\, an industry-standard tool created and administered by the EPA. \nThe application process for the next grantmaking cycle is expected to open in Spring 2025. \nAbout the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative \nThe Frankenthaler Climate Initiative is the first nationwide program to support energy efficiency and clean energy use for the visual arts and the largest private national grantmaking program to address climate change action through cultural institutions. The $15-million ongoing initiative provides critical support to visual arts organizations in the United States seeking to assess their impact on the environment and to lower ongoing energy costs. The Foundation has conferred more than $14.1 million since its launch in 2021\, supporting 244 energy efficiency and clean energy projects at 200 institutions across 37 states in the U.S.\nSupporting climate action at various stages of development\, FCI grants include:\n● Catalyst Grants (up to $15\,000)\, a new grant category for first actions\, small spaces\, or stand-alone projects with a quick turnaround;\n● Scoping Grants (up to $25\,000)\, supporting outside assessments to identify clean energy needs and options;\n● Technical Assistance Grants (up to $50\,000)\, focusing on complex project support and design; and\n● Implementation Grants (up to $100\,000)\, enacting innovative\, large-scale infrastructural changes\, often in concert with other funding sources.\nBuilding on the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation’s commitment to social impact philanthropy and to catalyzing positive change on critical issues in the arts\, the Foundation launched and leads FCI in association with RMI\, an independent nonprofit that engages businesses\, communities\, institutions\, and entrepreneurs in accelerating the adoption of market-based solutions that costeffectively create a clean\, prosperous\, and secure low-carbon future; and Environment & Culture Partners\, a nonprofit that creates relationships and leads collaborations that engage the cultural sector in broader climate action. SUMMARY:Blood Drive at Westbeth: Get T Shirts and Mets Tix for critically needed blood donations
DESCRIPTION:Click to enlarge \nSaturday July 6\, 2024 11am – 5pm\nWestbeth Community Rm\n155 Bank St\nNew York\, NY \nThe West Village Community Blood Drive will partner with New York Blood Center for a blood drive on Saturday\, July 6th\, 2024\, in the Westbeth Community Room from 11am to 5pm. \nHospitals and patients rely upon a steady flow of volunteer donors to receive life-saving donations. Summertime blood drives take on a critical importance because schools are out for summer and families set off on vacation\, New York Blood Center typically sees a decline in donors\, which can impact patient care. With high schools and colleges on break\, those blood drives don’t take place and many regular Donors become busy with Summer activities and vacations. At the same time\, the need for blood remains constant. Hospitals and patients rely upon a steady flow of volunteer donors to receive life-saving donations. Please help meet the needs of patients during the Summer. NYBC encourages all who can donate to sign up. One blood donation can save up to three lives. \nHere’s the Donor Scheduling Link: https://donate.nybc.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/316075 (you copy & paste this link into communications of your preference) \n \nDonors will have a choice to receive either a ‘We All Bleed The Same’ T-shirt or NY Mets T-shirt at the blood drive and a pair of NY Mets Tickets to all Donors which will be fulfilled via Email about 10 days after the blood drive.

SUMMARY:First Friday Music: Berg Jazz John Eckert\, Chris Hemingway\, Cecilia Coleman\, Will Woodard and Andy Watson
DESCRIPTION:Friday July 5\, 2024 at 7pm\nWestbeth Community Rm\n155 Bank St (enter through courtyard\nNew York\, NY \nFree admission \nJohn Eckert trumpet\nChris Hemingway alto sax\nCecilia Coleman piano\nWill Woodard bass\nAndy Watson drums \nDescription of the event: \n“Having seen Wozzeck\, I have been very interested in Berg’s music.\nI was fascinated by his 4 Early Songs\, hearing the most contemporary harmony used by modern Jazz performers throughout these songs written in 1910. I formed a small group to perform this music as Jazz. These songs were written for a vocalist with piano accompaniment. Alto Sax and Trumpet share the vocal melody\, Bass plays the bass line of the piano part. Pianist plays the piano part. Drums intuitively add Jazz rhythm. Generally no material is added\, none is left out.” \nAlban Maria Johannes Berg was an Austrian composer of the Second Viennese School. His compositional style combined Romantic lyricism with the twelve-tone technique. Although he left a relatively small oeuvre\, he is remembered as one of the most important composers of the 20th century for his expressive style encompassing “entire worlds of emotion and structure”. \nBios\nJohn Eckert is one of the busiest freelance trumpet players on the East Coast. He can play it all: jazz\, latin\, pop\, classical\, even opera. John juggles his engagements\, often working one or two recording or rehearsal sessions during a day followed by a bebop big-band gig or an evening at the Carlyle with Bobby Short later that same night.\nJohn has played on concert stages worldwide as well as in orchestra pits of operas and Broadway shows. He is equally comfortable in the lead trumpet chair of a big band or small jazz ensemble\, and enjoys playing all types of music with all kinds of musicians. “The variety just presents itself\,” says John\, explaining how he can play Benny Goodman or Stan Kenton arrangements one day\, then work with the Simon & Garfunkle Reunion Band\, the Smithsonian Jazz Orchestra\, Deodato’s 2001 Orchestra\, or the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra the next. John Eckert \nChris Hemingway\, born in Florence\, SC\, Chris grew up listening to the sounds of gospel\, soul\, R&B\, and blues even though he and his friends weren’t quite accepting of this “old people’s” music. However\, as a product of his own environment Chris eventually came full circle and would later pull from these early listening experiences to develop his overall approach to music today. Chris’ natural fluency in both classical and jazz styles separates him from most musicians.\nIn 2007 Mr. Hemingway won an Emmy Award as a performer of WQED’s (PBS affiliate station) “Live From Studio A.” As a sophomore at Duquesne University\, Chris won the School of Music’s prestigious concerto competition. At the young age of 21\, he was also a featured soloist with the Pittsburgh Symphony. Chris has studied with James Houlik at the North Carolina School of the Arts and at Duquesne University.@chrisheminwaysax \nA native of Long Beach \, California\, Cecilia Coleman started on piano at age five and began jazz piano studies at age fifteen. During the early 1980’s\, she studied with vibraphonist Charlie Shoemake\, arranger Tom Kubis and classical pianist Dr. Allan Giles.\nCecilia has led her own groups since 1990\, when she formed a trio with bassist Eric Von Essen and Kendall Kay on drums. In 1993\, she began working with her quintet. They recorded three CD’s:Words of Wisdom\,Young and Foolish and Home between 1990-1995 . Along with numerous local club and concert appearances\, the quintet also performed at the Monterey and Telluride Jazz Festivals. In 1998\, Coleman moved to New York and has played with a variety of groups as a sideman\, accompanist and leader.\nIn 2010\, Cecilia became a big band leader of some significance and has recorded two CD’s with the Cecilia Coleman Big Band. The 18 piece band continues to play concerts regularly in the NYC area and has been listed in the the Down Beat Critic’s poll as a rising star in the big band category. Cecilia Coleman \nWill Woodard’s big sound\, strong feel and creative approach have made him a welcome presence on stages and bandstands and in recording studios around the world. He’s been blessed with numerous opportunities to work with\, and learn from\, revered masters (Dave Liebman\, Ed Blackwell\, Billy Hart\, Chico Hamilton)\, cherished contemporaries (Walt Weiskopf\, Vince Herring\, Roy Hargrove)\, and great younger players (Chris Potter\, Jon Irabagon). Will just wrapped up the second of two long stints as a member of drummer Rick Hollander’s quartet\, with which he recorded five cds for the Concord\, Timeless and Laika record labels\, two of which featured his compositions\, and with which he toured extensively\, performing in major clubs\, concert halls and festival stages throughout the US\, Europe and Japan. Will Woodward \nAndy Watson has been a fixture on the New York jazz scene for over two decades. He has performed and recorded with an impressive list of artists and groups\, including: Toshiko Akiyoshi\, Bill Frisell\, Benny Golson\, Jim Hall\, Tom Harrell\, Jon Hendricks\, Woody Herman\, Joe Lovano\, Wynton Marsalis\, Marian McPartland\, James Moody\, Marvin Stamm\, Mike Stern\, Lew Tabackin and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. As a member of Jim Hall’s trio\, Andy played on the critically acclaimed recording\, “Dialogues “. All About Jazz magazine called his performance on David Bixler’s “Call It A Good Deal” “one of the top ten for 2006”. Other notable recordings include Jon Hendricks’ “Boppin’ at the Blue Note\,” Toshiko Akiyoshi’s “Hiroshima: Rising from the Abyss\,” Jim Hall’s “Downbeat Critic’s Choice”\, The Westchester Jazz Orchestra’s “Maiden Voyage Suite” and the Telarc compilations “Jazz: Live from New York\,” and “Triple Play: Live From the Blue Note.” Watson has toured extensively throughout the United States\, Europe\, Asia and South America\, appearing at many of the major festivals: Monterey Jazz Festival\, Ravinia\, JVC New York\, Playboy Jazz Fest\, JVC Saratoga\, Zurich Jazz Festival\, and the Vienna Jazz Festival Andy Watson

Deliciously complicated\, incredibly funny\, the work\, whether tragic\, tender\, mysterious or cruel\, betrays a profoundly empathic imagination. Both wildly conjured and deeply attentive to diverse literary and theatrical traditionsfrom vaudeville and Greek mythology to the Bible and boulevard comedyGreenspan’s plays ask big questions about history\, creation\, sexual behavior\, the complications of family and the very act of performing a play. \nMarianela Fernandez was born in Buenos Aires\, but spent most of her life in the cities of Córodoba and New York. SUMMARY:Art Take-Over at Westbeth: Three Dormant Spaces\, Three Art Exhibitions - One Event
DESCRIPTION:Click to enlarge. Photos on poster by David Plaake. \nJune 20 – July 14\, 2024 \n Hours:\nFriday\, Saturday\, Sunday 1pm – 6-m \n\nWALK AND TALKS:\nSaturday July 13\, 2024\nThere is a Crack in Everything at 3pm\nEx Femina at 4PM\n\nArt Take-Over is part of West Side Fest \nEx-Femina\nCo-curated by Valérie Hallier and Noah Trapolino\n*Located within Westbeth’s former child care center \nEx-Femina\, Latin for “from woman\,” encapsulates the profound transformation in the portrayal of femininity and the female gaze within contemporary art. This evolution is not merely a shift in representation but a reclamation of agency\, identity\, and perspective. \nInternational artists of various genders explore\, through mediums including sculpture\, painting\, photography\, collage\, drawing\, diorama and textile art\, facets of womanhood beyond the confines of objectification and passive observation. They depict women as subjects with complex narratives\, desires\, and emotions. Through figurative and abstract forms\, they explore themes of fertility\, nature\, animality\, intimacy\, technology\, spirituality\, consumption and trickery among others. \nEx-Femina inclusively and playfully celebrates the multifaceted nature of the female experience beyond conventional constructs. \nExhibiting artists include: Louisa Armbrust\, Aisha T Bell\, Amy Butowicz\, Martin Campos\, Tiffany Cole\, Ursula Endlicher\, Natasha Gornik\, Valérie Hallier\, Lily Hyon\, Daniel Maidman\, Jody MacDonald\, Shiri Mordechay\, Serena Nickson\, Agnès Pezeu\, Roxane Revon\, Morgan Suter\,\nElizabeth Tolson\, and Noah Trapolino. \nThere is a crack in everything\nCurated by Valérie Hallier\n*Located within Westbeth’s former Synagogue space \nThere is a crack in everything regroups contemporary artists working in installation\, sculpture\, drawing\, painting\, photography and video art. The show stages the duality of existence\, with some artwork emerging from darkness while others bask in the glow of light. The title\, inspired by Leonard Cohen’s lyrics\, serves as a metaphor for the inherent imperfections and vulnerabilities within our reality as well as within the previously dormant space the show populates and brings back to life. \nThe vast space still shows its defects as the artists imprint their own realities and dreamscapes onto its rough edges and surfaces\, but there is transformation\, instability\, there is expectation. We undulate between chaos and order\, soft and hard\, organic and artificial\, light and darkness. Nothing is fine\, but you are.\n\nExhibiting artists include: Santina Amato\, Amy Butowicz\, CHiKA\, Claudia Cortinez\, Jean Foos\,\nTom Fruin\, Tessa Grundon\, Valérie Hallier\, Leslie Kerby & Lianne Arnold\, Christina Massey\,\nJoseph Morris\, Anne Muntges\, Aston Philip\, Matthew Schlanger\, and Etty Yaniv. \nThere she lay\nCurated by Claire Felonis\n*Located within Westbeth’s former sculpture studio \nThe Westbeth building\, originally home to Bell Labs\, was partly submerged underwater during Hurricane Sandy. Drenched in history\, it serves as the ground of this group exhibition emerging from the depths of collected memory\, material investigation\, human identity and metamorphosis. \nThe amalgamation of these six artists’ practices manifests in a dystopian world\, which may have never existed at all. There she lay becomes a multidimensional dream-space suspended in time\, where false artifacts are unearthed\, strange fantasies lurk beneath the surface\, and secret languages are whispered under crashing waves. \nExhibiting artists include: Earth Ængel\, Vinny Castro\, Sasha Fishman\, Adrienne Greenblatt\, Gitte Maria Möller\, and Andreia Santana. \nCreative spaces available for lease through exclusive broker Denham Wolf\nContact Kate Hrbosky Email: Khrobsky@denhamwolf.com Tel: 646 814 8856
