Even in our “secularism\,” this notion continues to occupy a significant\nplace in our collective consciousness. \nThe word “paradise” can be traced through Latin and Greek to a relative of the Iranian\nlanguage Avestan\, the scriptural language of Zoroastrianism. Its near-Avestan root words\nshape the compound word Pairidaēza\, which translates as “to make or form a wall” and\n“enclosed garden.” \nIn his description of Paul Klee’s 1920 monoprint Angelus Novus\, Walter Benjamin wrote of\nthe angel of history: a creature facing backward towards the wreckage of the past\, forcibly\npropelled into the future by “a storm blowing from Paradise\,” which has “caught in his\nwings with such violence that [he] can no longer close them\,” despite the angel’s wish to\n“stay\, awaken the dead\, and make whole what has been smashed.”\nTaking Benjamin’s description of the storm in paradise as a cynosure\, this exhibition\nchallenges the paradise garden’s utopian ideal with questions its etymology implies: who is\nthe garden for? For what function is the wall designed? At what cost is the garden\nmaintained? \nThe artists brought together in this exhibition explore the tensions and questions inherent to\nthe paradise garden through varied media\, methods\, and narratives. Emblems of ritualism\nare interrupted and defanged\, exposing cracks in the walls where a new telos may emerge.\n– Celeste del Valle \nPlease join us for the opening reception of PAIRIDAĒZA on January 10\, 2025\, from 6-8\nPM. DESCRIPTION:Starting in 2025\, Westbeth will embark on a major renovation which will result in new roofs on the C\, D\, and G buildings\, installation of 660 new wood windows\, new elevators\, renovated building facades\, and modernized heating\,  water distribution\, and fire safety systems. In an effort to document elements of the property that will look different once construction is complete\, Westbeth management asked longtime resident David Plakke to photograph these impacted areas. He began his career as a musician in Montreal before moving to New York City\, where he spent ten years as bassist for two legendary tenor saxophonists\, Dewey Redman and David “Fathead” Newman. This experience provided a solid foundation for Menegon to continue his explorations as a bandleader\, composer and arranger\, and he has been composing and arranging music throughout his career. Menegon has released 6 recordings as a bandleader\, and his latest recording\, SOUND EMBRACE\, was released in 2024 on Valley Jazz Records. It features Jean-Michel Pilc on piano\, Chet Doxas on sax\, and Jim Doxas on drums. Let’s not forget the strong\, lyrical and harmonically- advanced bass playing of Menegon as a soloist or intuitively interacting with the ensemble.”\n@johnmenegonjazz \nSTEVE EINERSON (piano)\nPianist Steve Einerson originally hails from Milwaukee (WI) where he spent three formative years studying with David Hazeltine. After freelancing in the Milwaukee/Chicago circuit for several years\, he relocated to New York City in 2004\, fresh off the heels of being selected as a finalist to compete in the national jazz piano competition sponsored by the American Pianists Association. Whether it’s solo piano\, small groups or big bands\, Steve now finds his services in NYC in high demand and has performed at venues and jazz festivals across the country and around the world. Pete has performed at the Berlin Jazz Festival and Montreal Jazz Festival\, as well as concerts in thirty countries throughout Europe\, Eastern Europe\, Africa and Asia. He has performed with some of the best in the business\, including Grammy winner Vincent Herring\, David Williams\, Teri Thornton\, Peter Bernstein\, Gary Versace\, Ed Cherry\, Ben Monder\, Jeremy Pelt\, among others. Garrity has been living in the Hudson Valley since 2017 and produces a concert series out of his home/studio in Woodstock called BARNSTOCK.\n@garritydrums \nANGUS MENEGON (vocals\, synthesizers\, compositions)\nMonolounge is the synth-punched\, reverb-soaked vision of Australian songwriter-producer Angus Menegon. The music will blend the trio’s unique personalities\, experimentalism\, and deep understanding of the music’s history. \n Noah Haidu\nJazz pianist and composer Noah Haidu combines modernism\, soul\, and swing to create what the Wall Street Journal has described as “his own compelling brand of pianism.”\nNoah started classical piano at age 6\, spurred on initially by fear of his vindictive piano teacher. Falling in love with Jazz at age 20\, the young pianist  moved to NYC\, supporting himself as a waiter until he was fired for breaking one too many dishes.\nAfter paying his dues as a freelancer for many years\, Noah has lately toured and recorded with icons such as Billy Hart\, Buster Williams\,  Lenny White and Steve Wilson. He has been in a wide variety of musical contexts\, ranging from the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theater in midtown\, playing South African-style pop grooves with the Ndlovu Youth Choir\, all the way to cutting-edge contemporary jazz music with artists like Tivon Pennicott and Peter Evans. He cherishes every musical experience for what it is and hopes to continue to grow and learn in New York.  \nKayvan Gordon\nKayvon Gordon was born and raised in Detroit. At a young age\, he was taken under the mentorship of legendary trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. Later\, he went on to study at the University of Michigan. He has also had the honor of sharing the stage with Sullivan Fortner\, Robert Hurst\, Rodney Whitaker\, Johnny O’Neal\, Ravi Coltrane\, and JD Allen\, to name a few. Currently based in New York\, Kayvon Gordon seeks to contribute to the forward thinking aesthetic of his contemporaries while honoring the rich musical legacy of Detroit.

It is produced by Westbeth Artists Residents Council\, and hosted by Robert Bunkin\, artist and curator. \nJonathan Bauch sculptor Jis a New York City native\, who began his artistic career as an abstract painter\, graduating from Parsons School of Design and later studying at NYU and SVA. Following his need for more interaction and movement in his work\, his artistic focus evolved from painting to sculpture in the late 1960s. He worked with different sculptural materials\, such as wire mesh\, plaster and aluminum until 1996\, when he began working in steel and found a comfort in the medium and a freedom in both technique and composition he had not previously experienced.  \nPele Bauch is an interdisciplinary choreographer who weaves dance\, theater\, and installation design into unique performances. Bauch’s work has been selected for presentation at many New York venues. She has received residencies from The Joyce Theater Foundation; Dance Theater Workshop; Chocolate Factory; and 92Y Harkness Dance Center. Funders include the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council; Brooklyn Arts Council; and Harkness Foundation for Dance. Trained as a modern dancer\, Bauch draws from additional studies in fine arts\, Oli (Hawaiian Chant)\, and Hula\, as well as from her Hapa Haole Kanaka Maoli (multi-racial Native Hawaiian) heritage. \nLilly Rivlin is an American- Israeli journalist\, writer\, and filmmaker in the genre of documentary/ political films on women’s issue. Here many films include:  “Esther Broner: A Weave Of Women”\, (2013). In 1975 Esther Broner and Naomi Nimrod wrote the first Women’s Haggadah\, leading the way for modern Jewish feminism. For the next 36 years\, Esther Broner led the Feminist Seder in NYC with a core group of women. This film documents the evolution of the Jewish feminism through the Feminist Seder; “Grace Paley: Collected Shorts”\, (2010) is an intimate portrait of writer\, activist and New York icon Grace Paley (1922-2007)\, whose frank and brilliant stories celebrating the authentic\, daily lives of women are classics of American literature;Can You Hear Me? Israeli And Palestinian Women Fight For Peace (2006)\,[4] narrated by Debra Winger\, depicts the true realities of women who seek peace and change; :Gimme a Kiss” (2000)- Screened at the 2001 Jerusalem Film Festival.[5] A 38-minute film\, which raises issues about the destructive power of family secrets.

Besides acting\, also a playwright and novelist. His play “The Flower Palace\,” written while a member of City Rep. Theatre Co.\, was first performed in a reading two nights at Westbeth Theatre with the great Kate Reid and Helen Gallagher. He also toured the city in “The Marriage Proposal” by Chekhov\, for City Rep. and also toured twice with Brian Bedford with his one man Shakespeare show as Stage Manager at several universities in Canada and the U.S.\nBurk is currently working on a new novel as well as a screenplay for his first novel\, “Cast Iron Kate.” Westbeth Artist Page \nBeth Griffith actor\, musician\, singer has performed and toured extensively. She recently appeared in  the 2024 world premier of “Meltdown'” by Toby Armour at Theater for the New City. \nJoel Rooks has worked steadily in theatre\, both on and off Broadway as well as throughout the U.S. and overseas\, in addition to appearing in film and on TV\, he has played a character in  Grand Theft Auto V. Among a variety of roles\, Rooks has portrayed an Orthodox man visiting a brothel\, an Israeli intelligence officer\, and Sigmund Freud. And since the mid-2000s\, he has starred as George Burns in the one-man show “Say Goodnight Gracie: The Life\, Laughter and Love of George Burns and Gracie Allen” by Rupert Holmes. Rooks is a member of the faculty at the William Esper Studio and a member of the Ensemble Studio Theatre. His most recent appearance was on “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel”.Joel Rooks Interview \nAlison Armstrong’s life time involvement in Irish literature includes authoring\, The Joyce of Cooking (Station Hill Press\, 1986) and a volume of textual scholarship\, “The Herne’s Egg” by W.B. Yeats: The Manuscript Materials (Cornell Univ. Press\, 1993). Her essays and reviews have appeared in A Wake Newslitter\, Irish Literary Supplement\, James Joyce Literary Supplement\, American Arts Quarterly\, etc.; short fiction and poetry have been published in BOMB magazine\, Exquisite Corpse\, James Joyce Broadsheet\, Mid-American Review\, PN Review\, etc. A one act play\, “Ismene\,” – in a projected series of staged monologues — was published in Notre Dame Review (Summer 2009).
