A 2500 sq ft exhibition space offering solo and group shows of the work of Westbeth artists as well other arts organizations. For the past 20 years the Gallery has presented a far-ranging variety of painting, sculpture, photography, prints from the Westbeth Graphic Studio, collage, multi media and video installations. The Gallery is featured in Gallery Guide.

Westbeth gallery is pleased to present
this historic survey of the work of
the first visual artists who moved into
Westbeth in the year 1970.
In this brave new experiment
to provide affordable housing for
artists and their families, Westbeth's
first residents found themselves in an
unknown part of town. Its streets
dark, and forbidding, blood flowed
nightly into the gutters of the Meat
Market. Further south, the Men's House
of Detention reverberated with sirens
and secrecy. By day, what is now
known as the High LIne was a shadowy,
deteriorating hulk of rusting steel
brooding over and through the
building.
But within that building creativity
blossomed, friendships formed, children
grew, and the most extraordinary visual
art was created.
Celebrate with us the landmark year
of 1970, but also celebrate the
amazing visual work that continues
within its walls today. This exhibit
also underscores that for the cultural
life of a city to survive, how necessary
affordable housing for artists remains
as both an artistic and economic benefit
for today and for the future.
